Dad looks towards the Kori Creek and The Marshland at Lakhpat

Peaking through the slightly crumbled newspaper with a look on his face as “where have we come from” as we stopped our car to ask for the direction to the only soul we saw in the otherwise abandoned village,he told us to go ahead for Lakhpat Fort.

Lakhpat was a famous port town till the 18th century, was also known as ‘Basta Bandar’ in the 6th century. The term Lakhpat meaning millionaire means the land was once so fertile that the green crops earned one lakh coins.

We couldn’t fathom the sorry state of the place and started guessing what disasters could have happened that led people to run and never come back.Anticipating the cause,we guessed could be due to excessive shelling by Pakistan in the past(due to it being super close) or due to site being some sort of Ghost town with one legendary tragic story to tell.We asked a locals we could see walking (one or two) who told us that it was a deadly disease that wiped the whole town out, while the army personal at the Lakhpat Gurudwara told us that it was the massive impact of the earthquake of 1819 that wiped out the entire village. After the earthquake the area became barren and the crops withered away due to lack of water as the river Sindhu disappeared after the earthquake.

Bhuj To Lakhpat Fort(135km,2 hours 30 minute)

As yesterday,if you remember we literally starved in fondness of Rann.Today we were determined to have some food along the way.So the first thing we did was ask where we get good food along the way.We were told Nakhatrana was we must stop for food.As today we left early in the morning with fruits in hand,by the time,we reach Nakhatrana we weren’t as hungry so we deliberately passed through.Further ahead,we saw many mustard fields, mostly fenced, though I jumped in one that wasn’t for a quick photo-op.If you are leaving early from Bhuj, the most popular thing you would find in the mornings would be Kachori to eat on road.

Bhuj To Lakhpat:Tropic Of Cancer

If you live in Gujarat, you would notice sunrise happens quite late
Due to Gujarat Being On The Western
To read previous posts on Rann of Kutch and Bhuj

It was when we were driving past this road,we saw a signboard of tropic of cancer. The tropic of Cancer at 23.3 degrees north divides India in two parts. If you look into globe, you will find this line that goes and passes through.Except at the site we wouldn’t find a line marked;to which my brother told that it is an imaginary line.Since this part of Gujarat or even whole of Gujarat is located on the westernmost part, the sunrise happens quite late by around 7:20 am everyday. So 6 am is still dark in Gujarat.

My own DDLJ moment

Bhuj To Lakhpat:Mata No Madh

Along the road to Lakhpat around 90kms is Mata No Madh,a temple of family god of Kutchis which is visited by many pilgrims who come to temple bare feet.

Lakhpat Fort And Tomb Of Gosh Mohammed

The Beautiful Tomb Of Gosh Mohammed

Now usually,I think of fort as a defensive wall in which we have some settlement or some establishment inside within closed spaces.I haven’t so far seen a fort which just has a defensive wall and inside it is a village and the tomb in the open.Climbing up a few stone stairs onto the Lakhpat Fort,we could see 360 degree views of Kori Creek,Marshland,Sand and Rann.Further ahead is said to be pakistan; As we couldn’t see any establishment on the end of our vision,we exactly do not know where it was.A few shots from the movie Refugee has been filmed in Lakhpat.

The tomb of Gosh Mohammed just in the vicinity of Lakhpat Fort is an interesting structure with bright green doors.Gosh Mohammed was a holy man revered by both Hindus and Muslims and who lived in Lakhpat in the early 19th century. He was also known as a healer and for his songs about Krishna.

Lakhpat Fort:Can Skip , If You Visit Dholavira

I highly recommend a drive down Dholavira if you have a choice to make between Lakhpat and other places. If you have been to White Rann before as we did,you wouldn’t find it as exciting. But if you have 5-6 days to cover Gujarat and at your leisure you may as well include it.But if you have just 3 days, skip Lakhpat and Narayan Sarovar and head to Koteshwar and Mandvi. And the next day Dholavira. If you do so,you wouldn’t be missing much..

Lakhpat Gurudwara

At Gurudwara Pehli Patashi

If you still happen to travel the way we did,do not forget to visit the Lakhpat Gurudwara also called the “Gurudwara Pehli Patashi” meaning “Gurudwara Of The First Master" where Gurunanakji visited the place on his way to Mecca Madina many times and stayed there for a few days.In old times,Lakhpat was part of Sind(Pakistan). From Lakhpat Guruji crossed to Somiani port in sind for his famous journey to Mecca Madina in Saudi Arabia.Several rare treasures are preserved here including the “The Charan Paduka”(wooden footwear) of Gurunanakji.

The Lakhpat Gurudwara was where we met many army personal and discussed the current state of Lakhpat. After the darshan,we had langar with sumptuous home type cooked prasad and food.Free langar and tea are served to the visitor around the clock. You need to wash your own utensils at the gurudwara but the food was really yummy! You can also stay at the Gurudwara at visitor’s sleeping room.

Lakhpat To Narayan Sarovar[35 km]

Colors That Sparkle

It was said to be coming in between Lakhpat and Koteshwar, and hence we chose to visit it,but you can easily skip it if you have not much inclination to religion.Narayan Sarovar is a very sacred place for hindus.Narayan Sarovar stands for lake of Narayana aka Vishnu,

But you can still skip Lakhpat and Narayan Sarovar and choose Koteshwar and Mandvi instead

There are 5 sacred lakes and Narayan Sarovar is built on one of them.As per the panditji, the Sarovar is dry for last 3 years. The road is straight from Lakhpat taking us to a bit of roller coaster with up and down slope along the road.We liked the colours on the temple, however the temple was closed during our visit time i.e 1:30pm.The temple closes from 1-4pm.We were told to visit Koteshwar as it is open throughout..

The black camel who was reluctant to pose but was captured by my brother in the dried up Narayan Sarovar

Narayan Sarovar To Koteshwar Temple[4km]

Koteshwar is a name of ancient Shiva temple and the legendary story goes like…(from wikipedia)

The view from Koteshwar Temple

1)The story of Koteshwar begins with Ravana, who won it as a boon from Lord Shiva for an outstanding display of piety, this Shiva linga of great spiritual power. But which Ravana, in his arrogant haste, accidentally dropped and it fell to earth at Koteshwar. To punish Ravana for his carelessness, the linga turned into a thousand identical ones, some versions of the story say ten thousand, some a million. Unable to distinguish the original, Ravana grabbed one and departed, leaving the original one here, around which Koteshwar Temple was built. The temple is also known as Kotilingeshwar Temple.

This is by the middle of sea,the water stands quite shallow

2)Another version of story says, when Lord Shiva was delighted with the worship and forfeit of Ravana, he gave him a Ling-full of religious power. Lest Ravana should become endless as a result of this advantage, all the Gods united together and conspired to gain the Ling from Ravana through dishonesty and installed it as Kotilengeshwar.  It looked to me like a popular site,as all along the way was signboards of Gujarat Tourism.Surrounded by shallow sea on both sides with the view of the light of Karachi on a clear night,Koteshwar once was an ancient port which now is a fishing village famous for Koteshwar Temple/ There in the temple, you would see Shiv Lingas but also Nandis and Kurma.I was surprised to see a Turtle being prayed. Kurma or Turtle is the second incarnation of Hindu God Vishnu. The avatar was taken by Vishnu to help the Devas acquire the amrut during Samundra Manthan.

Mannat of Bindi Tree for jannat in present life

One more thing that you would see is the tree with Thousands of Bindis as part of mannat by several women.I even saw a few ladies sticking bindis to the tree.

Why 'Kurma' or the turtle is prayed..

 Koteshwar Temple To Bhuj:Drive Back

As we drove back from Koteshwar we saw a diversion in the middle onto our right towards Mandvi for 121km.We decided to head back to Bhuj as even the time we would be reaching Mandvi would be evening. However,as suggested by one of my brother’s colleague,Mandvi is a beautiful place with beach by the windmills and Vijay Vilas Palace where sequences of movie Hum Dil De Chuke Was Shot.

Watching this beautiful video of Birla Sun Life Insurance' bought a sense of relief from struggle in my own life with a few drops of tears in eyes in retrospect. If it is so difficult for a kid suffering from ‘’ and his father, imagine us,who live their normal lives with certain ups and downs and still complain. However,at the end,it is the love with a bit of planning that keeps everyone on track. It is also the time we give to others, that makes life easy and worthwhile. This is a story on how we kept our 'Hoslas Buland' to achieve what we ever wanted from our lives.

"Main dikhti hoon maa jaisi sab kehte hai ... sab kehte hai, sach kehte hai ... par main hoon apne papa ki beti”

To the most stubborn girl in my college days who had never witnessed any discomfort thanks to people in life who surrounded me;for the last few years I was all in the open, completely nude of my thoughts, willing to trust.Often so happens that, the world isn’t fair when anything unfortunate happens but is totally in sync when there are applauds. It is then one realises who are and who would be with you forever;friends, family, spouse the true colours come out open.Sometimes you are left alone and in those times, you are reminded that your savings(Emotional and Material) can only save you.I never learnt the art of saving thanks to Dad in my teens, who would gently tell me to ‘save’,but would pamper me with so much love that I never needed the material gains. He would often gently put a blanket on me when I slept in the trains, even making my bed till the last semester of my college.I would often watch him pursue his dreams in balance with his work.Astrology as his interest was for one year,in that one year, every weekend he would come from his posting and join the class and go back.We hardly understood his passion, but his desire to write on the stars got him a medal. He even was appreciated for his command on Hindi at a national level.

                                              #KhudKoKarBuland:All Life Needs Is All.Balanced.
The inspiration got into me,like a healthy disease.I would often think if I could achieve excellence in field I love but neither was the desire strong nor was the maturity to pursue them.Even though right from the beginning,I got prizes in Music,Drawing and Studies I was least interested to pursue either of them,so much so that when I joined the Engineering College it was only because everyone else was doing so.I hated Maths to the core, and I wonder if it had any significant influence in my life ever.Good part was I never felt jealous or insecure,as to me ‘My own objective was to do my best’,’rest I never cared’.

My school best friend would often suggest me to save but I would like any ‘colony’ kid would refuse to let go of my comfort level of thinking neglecting it as just another option for older people.Because as today,I was used to living in ‘now’.And as any other colony kid,I was often surrounded with naukar - chakkar for help.I even didn’t know if there was a queue for Railway tickets until I got my first ticket in my third year in college.I thought life was automatic, and everything came ready made. Often people complain on their restrictions to pursue their dreams.Dad had a softer side but his harder side was restrictive that made our movements difficult as independent.Even if I had to go anywhere,I had to take permission as every household, going solo was just out of question and tagging along someone was 90% of the times the chosen option. Most often, the answer would be no to free - spirited reckless wander, which clashed with my hopes and dreams. Learning to grow in the restriction and expand my boundaries was one thing I learnt early on.

Hoping that bad things would get better doesn't make them better
#KhudKoKarBuland to fight and act on your bad and turn them into good.

A lot of people would disagree to what I say today. But the past three years has gained me insights into things I had hidden in the corner. The change in me,started to happen a few days before my marriage. My dad said one day to mom, that the money from our savings is going to create a marriage of our dreams. That was the day I knew the power of savings. As I watched my granddad carefully,I saw balancing married life and friendship wasn’t as big deal, for even at the age of 80,he had his best friends and school friends, playing at club with him or were laughing at the silliest of jokes. At this age of Wassapp and Facebook he had his diary with phone numbers of everyone he considered his.How many of us do that today?

After struggling my way into the world of software of 5 years, neither my heart was,nor my mind was into mindless coding.I was doing so,to balance my healthy appetite for shopping to the salary I get and was content in my own world.Until one day,I left it to a better me.The better me came with a share of struggles,I call learning phase.Joining an adventure firm that didn’t let me travel, but others travel,I wasn’t satisfied with what life had to present to me.Sooner I realised I needed money to travel to places I wish to.This time,I had no source of free income.Hopping into part times, home based jobs which gave me salary to sustain, with savings to plan for my future travel was the only option. It was then I came bang on with the ideologies I resisted.Should I save for future or should I live in present?I often would see my friends and peers, invest, and would wonder why if they anyways have to pay in instalments. My passion wasn’t a new home in my name but a new destination I would love going to and that is where I invested all my energy which fetched me two awards and 17 destinations in 3 years.

Everyone goes through a grumpy face not once but many times in a year
What makes the curve from :( to :) is love.

But often clouded with the achievements of oneself,we forget that it involves a price to pay which others call it ‘I was lucky or unlucky’.Luck is a passing phase.Last two years,to me was the struggle of the worst kind.Besides blogging which I love,I was suffering from chronic Sinus and Thyroid disorders that made my mood swing like there’s no tomorrow.I would take medicines daily,so that I do not sneeze every minute,so that my fever is low.My nose would pain,my face would be swollen, and I was groggy and irritated. One moment I’ll be happy, other moment I’ll be bursting in tears. One moment I would want to travel and leave for months, another moment I would want myself to be wrapped in love. One moment,I would love to pose for my style moment, another moment my body will resist perfumes and makeup, building in rashes. Meanwhile,I experienced hurt from people who I thought were closed allies.Stress grew into me like a climbing ‘money-plant’ tree.I would often look towards the fan and wonder ‘why me!’ and then would blog.I would eat less, talk less and was conscious if my face in the videos were perfect.I would forget lines, would stumble with every sneeze or heavy headiness. It was also when I got several interesting opportunities I had to say ’no’ to,but to me now, building up my image wasn’t my only motto in life.I had outgrown on what people talk about me,outgrown if it ever mattered.Outgrown if there was anything negative in life, only lessons we never understand.Talking to one of my friend who overcame ‘cancer’ which the world consider ‘an invite to death' by positive thinking and treatment,I was convinced the world isn’t as bad.Her funda was ‘Be brave, forgive people,do what you feel is happy, listen to what your body says to you, work out,be nice to others’ and rest leave to God.

My closest peers, would know I was so weak, but how strong my blog spelt like!

The beauty of the virtual world is it can disguise the pain in your face with soothing words.

People who would hurt or trouble will most often be the closest ones
But once you know what their needs are, there is beauty in everyone.
And every plan with them then comes naturally.

But during my days of struggle which others give in to,I chose to attend every wedding I thought was close, spent time with my family attending their birthdays,my friends who I sang with or listening to when I wasn’t well,my husband who even with my groggy face would kiss me and say everything will be fine,my in laws who I never had time to understand. As my medical bills rose to Ayurveda,Homeopathy,Allopathy,I felt a huge sense of responsibility to earn and contribute. I would never take my sickness as an excuse to anything, giving time to everything that was important to me,no matter what.Later I started accepting my swollen face or a rash here and there and started a blog where makeup and pose doesn’t have a place. Suddenly in spite of so much work on my blog and otherwise,I had time for everyone, because now my happiness came from them being happy, the happiness I missed in me when I wasn’t well.More often than not,we never realise how important time is for everyone, and more important love is,until we find that we are too weak to get involved.I started appreciating myself and the values I have.

I was sure,if I give it to what nature is willing to take from me now,I would never have the strength to get up.I attended sessions which spoke of health, preventive measures, stress, talks.I read my horoscope to know if there was a time I would be fine.Like perfectly able to breathe, sleep, dance.Like rest of us.The final bang came just before my one month backpacking trip to Europe.I completely blacked out walking with a friend. I didn’t know if it was stress or something else. But I decided to solve it,going then and there to a doctor ,getting injections for a week and leaving the next week. For a day or two,I felt an effort to get up and get going, but later I ignored even little symptoms which tried finding its way in.Coming back, now I know perfect balance in my lifestyle.

Adding fun and run, discarding bad emotional habits, ignoring gossips, balancing between real and virtual, laughing and spreading love to people who respect and value more was my mantra. If it wasn’t for my dad’s inspiration to excel and rise above,I would be still lying at any corner, crying, hoping that someone helps me.If It wasn’t for my dad’s fight for his passion,I would still be married to some stranger I never knew.If it wasn’t for my dad’s words,I would still be spending every penny on fancy clothes than my dreams. If it wasn’t for my conflict with restrictions,I may have lost myself in the routine considering it another safe option. If it wasn’t for my hubby’s generous comments and support,I would still be wondering if love came with an expiry date or endless sacrifices. If it wasn’t for my friends patience,I would still be singing my tunes alone. If it wasn’t for my swollen face,I wouldn’t be knowing what harmful chemicals do these upmarket products contain? If it wasn’t for my bad health,I wouldn’t be knowing who my true well wishers are. This to me,came as a blessing,as a lesson to make me realise important things I had been missing on.

Do you still think, fate makes you?Think again. Chances are Grass always looks Greener on the other side.

But saving for a better life and planning it well makes all the difference backing up every risk you take, every bad thing that happens and every good thing that comes your way.

So instead of shouting ‘Lul ho gai hai hamari life” at every difficult turn,#KhudKoKarBuland and each dream will be yours!

Dholavira:Ancient Harappan Site With Rann On Both Sides

I take a quick selfie @ Rapar - Dholavira Road
To know what I wore, click here

My brother said that even if he throws a stone,it wouldn’t drown in these craters due to excessive salt content but the moment he threw one,it submerged. This road was a stretch just before Dholavira.Long stretch perfect for your drive of a lifetime.Be it bike or car or by public conveyance. But apart from this long stretch of road on both sides, was there anything else to see?The answer is yes.

Watch the video below to get a hint:

Bhuj To Dholavira[218 km,4 hour 16 min] via Bhachau Hwy

This stretch of road would be your best drive in India
For previous posts on my 3 day trip to Rann, click below

My mom claimed that this stretch of road was far more impressive and worth visiting than Lakhpat and decided to go for a long walk along the road with white rann on both sides.Random crater like water holes welcomed us along the road at certain places while at others you can walk in and go all along the white rann as long as you want to.

The best part is there ain't many people who go there
And there isn't a permit required.

The same feeling of eternal prevailed again, this time,it was a territory not visited by many.A few times,we wondered if these craters were deep, considering the fact that on the map, this stretch is located on Khadir bet island of Kutch, which means that it may have proximity to the Gulf of Kutch, the sea.

Awesome Twosome.I told you,I just can't get enough of it!
Add dholavira in your 3 day itinerary next time.

Dholavira is one of the two well preserved largest harrappan sites in India.

Dholavira:Are permits required?

The answer is no.Being close to Pakistan at borders,we wondered if we again have to apply for permits, which we figured out that no,Dholavira doesn’t require permits of any sort. While driving down this road, which is a little offbeat, you would cross many small villages, barely few cars on road, bop’s(Border outposts) on your right and left within few kilometres but no permits are required to visit the touristic sites of Dholavira.

Dholavira:Essential to keep in mind

3G's don't work after a point
While coming back from Dholavira to Rapar, you would find that your 3G’s aren’t working, the network even is not there.Since we weren’t aware of the fact, and were solely dependent on our google maps,we missed the cut for little rann of kutch from Rapar. But if you do have adequate time,it comes 25-30 km ahead of Rapar and can be easily visited enroute. In whichever case, while going to Dholavira, carry a print of maps or a saved map on your phone. As when we stopped at Rapar and asked people where was the little Rann Wild Ass Sanctuary, they were unable to understand.Dad forcefully said once "Jaha Gadhe Milte Hain" and got response "Han Kahi To Hai" with a clueless look.Last weekend we went to Little Rann of Kutch and I must say,Its worth going!
Guide upto you
As you enter they request you to take a guide. You can park the car at the compound. We didn't take a guide because we thought it was quite walkable. But guides are available in case you are interested in knowing more than a little detail which is written there.

Bhuj To Rapar Drive [ 127km, 2 hours 22 minutes]

Now,these days the world is such that we depend so much on internet that every word said we assume is true.Sometimes the information conveyed is time bound.Like while doing my research for Dholavira,in lot of websites its written that the stretch of road is very bad at times,so we were concerned if we would again bump into road similar to last stretch of Bhuj.Google map was showing us two directions SH51 via Bhachau taking 4 hours 21 minutes, and other NH 15 taking 5 hour 2 minute.

As we talked to a few locals before taking the cut for Rapar, they confidently said the road ahead via Rapar has been repaired and you must take this route. The drive was pleasant throughout. So we took Route 1(SH 51) of Google map to save time and trusting what others told us to.

Bhuj To Rapar:Stop At Rapar

The fafdas are fried

Internet says, that there isn’t plenty of options to eat while driving down from Bhuj to Dholavira except Rapar.Rapar comes 2 hours after Bhuj.So it was our first pit stop where most of the shops were just opening…

And made

As other days,we also had fruits and Khakras and packed Parle-G’s with us.But as we saw a little activity in one of the hotels,we decided to stop and ask. So we asked them,as a regular any Indian can we get any vegetable gravy with Chapati or Puri,to which we got a reply Fafdas with Jalebis is all you get at this time.As I haven’t had tried this combo before and we were all hungry,we had to say yes.Happily,we ate,as for the first time,I realised that fafdas can go well with Jalebies and green chilies and chatni and chai.Watch the video to know how it was made.

To have it with Jalebis,Mirchi,Chutney,

As we travelled ahead of Rapar,we found there were some other small villages with a few shops. So Rapar is not the last point where you get food. There are though very few places where you can find something. This route is a little offbeat, that passes through villages but the roads are nice so there was nothing to worry or complain about plus it was shorter.

Rapar To Dholavira

In between Rapar to Dholavira comes this stretch of road with White Rann which could be easily be 4 km or may be more. After the drive are small villages you pass through. There isn’t many options to stay in Dholavira except Toran which I am not sure is good or bad,but hasn’t been appreciated much online, many reviews even suggesting it to avoid if you can.
Toran is the name of Gujarat Tourism's Resorts,Stay Options,Cafes
You would see that at every Touristic Site in Gujarat
While Toran at Rann is said to be good,Dholavira has below average reviews
For those who do not know:
The word Toran comes from a decorative for doors famous from Gujarat

Photo from Indianetzone
Many people if they want to stay in Dholavira station themselves at Rapar, but its upto you how you want to do it.We chose to not stay.Leaving early, you can even come back to Bhuj or Ahmedabad .

Dholavira:What To See And Avoid

 Harappan Site:Must

I thought its going to be nothing, but its so well preserved

I am no big fan of history. My mom is.But over the last two years, the places which I have seen let me admit were rather fascinating.Civilizations that lived and existed before us,had much more structure and were more organised that us.For example the water system for Harrappans are known world over.I thought the Harappan Excavated site must have been completely damaged but what I saw was rather beautiful. The similar cut rocks with which the homes and the citadels were made still remain. With the view from the top was white rann yet again.

Oldest signboard with letters yet to be decoded.
What do you think it is?

Harappan civilisation is one of the world’s first great civilisations ,which dates back to 3rd millennium BC.Discovered in 1967-68,this major Harappan city is spread across the area of 100 hectares, one among the biggest Harappan sites in the Indo-Pak continent.

The citadel, middle and the lower town.

The excavation bought into light the remarkable city of exquisite planning, aesthetic architecture and amazing water management system. The spectacular city of Dholavira was in the form of parallelogram guarded by a fortification. The area measuring 770 metres in length and 616 metres in width encloses three principal division ie. the citadel, the middle town and the lower town.

The citadel standing majestically on the south consists of two fortified divisions. The castle in the east and the bailey in the west. The middle town, also fortified lies to the north and is separated from the citadel by a long and wide ceremonial ground. The lower town was laid our within the general fortification in the east of the middle town.In the citadel and middle town area, interesting network of drains, both small and large are discovered.

The unique feature of Dholavira is the occurrence of series of reservoirs,of which three are now exposed. These reservoirs were used for storing fresh water, possibly filled with water diverted from a nearby seasonal nullah. These reservoirs are partly excavated into the bedrock and partly built on masonry. There is provision of steps to reach the water level. This system of reservoirs provided fresh water to the flourishing Harappan city in a region, where the present day rainfall averages from 300 mm to 400 mm.Very often many seasons may go without rains. This achievement is a high watermark of Harrapan enterprise.

A large number of antiquities were unearthed from the site.Noteworthy among those are graduated scale made on a charred rib bone of an animal.A number of seals and dealings, beads of semi precious stones, gold, copper, shell, terracotta etc.Among the terracotta figurines, the unicorn animal figure is an important discovery of it kind.Gold, silver, copper, shell and terracotta ornaments were in use at that time.A vessel of chlorite and some other antiquities of west asian origin indicate its link with the mesopotamia.

Fossil Park:Avoid

As per reviews of trip advisor,Fossil Wood Park is also one of the recommended site in Dholavira which I would say completely avoid. If we hadn’t bumped into BOP Karni by mistake, this journey would have had been pain.Just as you get out of Harappan site,go towards the helipad, take a left and its complete offroading on kacha road.Someplaces there are tyre marks, some places there aren’t.Google map doesn’t work in the area so it was easy to get lost.We saw a board somewhere in the off road as around 5km ahead for Fossil Park, which we kept on going in search along the kacha road with frequent up and down.We could see, fencings and walls,so we didn’t know if we were crossing anywhere to Pakistan by mistake or if we weren’t.There was simply no one to tell us.As after the bumpy ride of the 5 km which took us more than half a hour,we saw a board on our right,so ancient we couldn’t understand where it led to.

BOP Karni to find our way for fossil park
Though we could capture so much, this site needed a 360 degree panorama with rann on both side of temple and the island at far.It was beautiful

So we head straight to the BOP outpost to ask the soldier and the tea seller on where the hell was the fossil park.BOP Karni was by accident but it was a pleasant site, there is a temple, white rann and an island we could see.I wondered what the island was,and belonged to which country.Any ways,we head back on their recommendation on the same sign board we missed, the soldier told us to not drag our car lest it might get stuck. So once you cross any signboard that looks even more antique than the fossils, drive through. It takes you to another roller coaster obviously with the view of rann, and stops midway. That meant the car cannot go further with stones stopping the way and you have to walk down.

Looking down,we chose to skip, there were few stones kept at the base from where Rann started.Mom told she’s been to other fossil parks, and the wood becomes so old,it feels like stone. The site didn’t interest either of us,so we chose to head back, and that is where our car got stuck. The road ahead was narrow and very steep uphill. The car started going back, and my brother told us to get down. After he drove for a while then we got in.What an adventure you must avoid.Had it not been for BOP karni,we would have been very very disappointed. Please do not search for BOP karni though :) ,it is quite far from Harappan site, and unless you have adequate time to wander around in the hope that the fossil park might be good, head back to Rapar and little Rann of Kutch on the way.Google maps don't work in this site.

I hope you liked my series on Rann of Kutch,if there's anything you'd like to know more,do give me a buzz.Next week we'll talk about Little Rann Of Kutch(Another interesting site which can be accessed while coming back from Dholavira),Nalsarovar,Modera Sun Temple,Thol Bird Sanctuary,Rani Ki Vav and Adalaj. We will also hear stories on why sarees are used as fences, what makes little rann of kutch not so white, where sonia gandhi favourite patola sarees are made and why rani ki vav is the new unesco heritage site.

The excitement of travelling to Europe is itself like a dream come true. For many, people save for their honeymoons or their anniversaries to enjoy 15-20 days in Europe. For the rest of us,the budget keeps us tight lipped if we ever harbored any plans such.As the blogs and travel magazines grow in heaps and bounds we wonder if every country needs to be visited. If every country is as beautiful as every printed picture. We often end up regretting the country we missed going. But are there reasons why certain countries are given more weight-age than certain others.Does the blogs or the articles convey even half the real picture?

As I researched for my trip to Europe for a month that included Greece,Turkey,Italy,France in Oct 2014 ,I found no source which warned me of what I must be careful with. Most of it,I found was an fogged up beautiful view of places to gain TRP’s and comments.People travelling solo wouldn't write about experiences they found defeating. The truth is travel is not always a happy picture. It comes with both happy and bad moments,as life.

Today I am going to write about the real picture of when you travel Europe and what you must know before you start enjoying a place.

The intention of this article is not to bring down your hopes on planning Europe but to make more cautious choices you take/make when there.

This trip of mine wasn't a FAM Trip.Partly,I won the Travel Shop Turkey contest wherein my 7 day tour to Turkey was inclusive(excluding airfare) and partly I won Skyscanner contest worth 1 lakh and rest was from my own money. You would ask me why rest,I would say because I booked the tickets very last minute due to Skyscanner coupon to be redeemed within 3 months from my win.Since I won in September end,I had no choice but to book tickets and accommodation very last minute as I wanted to visit Greece and the islands in Oct.I would tell you also, here tips and tricks to save just in case if you are wondering if that is even possible.I was in Turkey for 10 days,Greece for 11 days,Italy for 5 days and Paris for a day.

1)Packaged Tour or On Your Own:

Turkey was partly on a packaged tour
Which I thoroughly enjoyed
Though sans flexibility of time

Many of us,are often confused on this part if they want to do a packaged tour or on their own.Even on discussion with my friends and family, people told me that in one month you can cover so many countries, why do just a few?

The main motive then is to enjoy vacation as a carefree soul not bothering about penning down plans in the most budgeted way possible. As every foreigner who comes to India does the Golden Triangle, that includes Delhi Agra Jaipur or Kerala but is that it about India is the question. That just gives a peek-a-boo of important sites in India.Similarly, that goes for a packaged tour to Europe. If your idea is to cover the highlights of a place in a short span of time, packaged tour is your choice. There is nothing wrong in it.A trip for 6 countries 12 days would roughly cost you around 1.5 lakhs on a packaged tour + your own personal expenses when there.

You can also rent a car when in Europe which comes as quite cheap and at leisure both.

Now,coming to doing it on Your Own.The best part of doing it on your own is the flexibility it provides plus you could save extra money if you plan well in advance.I say well in advance is because,if you book it last minute you wouldn't be saving much on Airfare.Travel Shop Turkey was my first packaged tour, and I loved it in Turkey as the guides were well informed, mostly on time the buses used to come, the hotels were posh and nice, but it was time bound. That meant if I liked Grand Bazaar and wanted to stay for 3 hours or more,I have to cater to other guests in the bus and most often we would run to catch the bus because we always felt we wanted to spend more time where ever we liked.Doing it on your own gives you the flexibility to choose your own stay - boutique hotels (if backpacking is not your type) or hostels(if you want to make it real cheap and interact) or couch surfing(knowing people up close and staying complimentary) and allows you to dedicate as much as you would want to at each place. You can even do backpacking in Europe for 1 lakh in a month and a half(including airfares) provided you are comfortable being on road or with hosts. Many of us,do not want to make our vacation a shared space.I find hostels the most easy way to not overdo it.However, backpacking needs a bit of planning and research. It however can be more relaxed if you plan a trip of say 10 days at one single place, otherwise a little knowledge is necessary.

2)Making a Choice:

Where this road leads me to..
In Santorini Greece.
Greece is a perfect exotic honeymoon destination
But for backpacking..well I don't think so.

While planning Europe,we often tend to draft the same itinerary as is present online.Do not. When I was comparing my own budget to Greece vis-a-vis if I go on a packaged tour,I casually chatted with Makemytrip consultant online who told me Greece won’t be possible with Italy and France. On asking why so,she casually said mam we have other beautiful countries like Italy,France,Germany,Austria why don’t you choose that.I said her Greece to Italy is accessible by low cost ferries and flights,so why isn’t it possible? She said it doesn't happen like that.I found the answer weird.

But the thing is with your shrinking budget, you would find not this, but many other sites, give you the same answer.Unless you are ready to pay off your pockets in huge amounts,a customization is a difficult choice.Even websites like Backpacker Co which are my favorites by the way,I would say, staying in hostels is much much cheaper than planning with them. However,do plan with them if you want it to be a little more organised.

Remember you can always locally pick up a packaged tour when at a place, like in Capadoccia I found that even if I would want to cover many places and activities(I did pottery in Turkey!) I wouldn't be able to on my own,as the public conveyance were less,so I hopped in to the central area, booked my day tour through a local agent which was much less than what I could have got from here.Ditto for Paris.

3)Keeping Enough Time Gap:

While backpacking Greece,I realized that hopping onto islands was a real fun deal. The problem just was it came with big bold sea.Airfares when booked in advance were similar to the ferry fare,so I had booked most of it on planes except one on which I wanted to experience the ferry ride.To tell you the truth, the day before my ferry was scheduled, the other ferries and all jets were cancelled due to strong winds and bad sea.The worst you would want any day is to get stranded in an island,or book last minute planes to the nearby mainland because its going to be expensive.

Secondly, you cannot be sure of everything. As an when I researched,I got to know that the Havatas bus in Turkey from Airport goes 24 hours as per online, but I had to wait for 4 hours at the airport to catch the morning bus at 5am. Most of these sites aren't updated.Things always don’t go as per schedule.Keep that blanket.Zurich Airport is so big that it takes an hour and a half to reach the gates.

In Venice,I felt in winters(that is Oct),the sun rises late and goes down early(like 4 pm). That meant,I had to plan my vacation accordingly.

4)Keep City Center as focus

Hostels in Greece are a delight
I stayed in both City Circus near Monastiraki Metro
And Athens Backpackers near Acropolis Metro
This one is Athens Backpackers, and the pic is half the 6 dorm room.

Book hotels which is located in city centre or which is connected to metros or buses. That ways your vacation will be more easy. You can book through Booking.com where you have option to choose(near city centre) with some hotels with free cancellation and pay on the place,HiHostels(if you have a youth hostel card or you want to try them),Skyscanner(pretty much sums up everything - your flights, your stay, your car rentals, flight low cost alerts).Recheck reviews of hostels or hotels though through Tripadvisor.

5)Knowing a Place Before You Dive In:

Though I liked Greece,
I would any day choose Turkey over Greece.
Ephesus in Turkey is more beautiful than Acropolis to me!

As an when I see the exaggeration everywhere,I feel some things need to be told.Like Greece has amazing hostels and stay including lovely boutique hotels/lodges with friendly hosts. However,If you are travelling solo and you have to make a choice, stick to Turkey instead of Greece.Turkey has more Greek history, its more beautiful, very similar to Greece in terms of food and drinks, the people are friendly, and it has got everything a traveler needs. So instead of spending that 1.5 lakh on a place which so and so said is nice, invest in a place which is culturally more rich.If you are travelling as a couple or with friends,Greece is a perfect destination. It’s highly romantic specially the islands. The islands looks so picture perfect that every corner can be a frame.Athens can be a backpackers choice but I would still prefer Turkey.

It has got history but I found Turkish history to have much much more history even the sites are more worth watching. Most often ‘a Sea place’ gets a little boring, when doing alone unless you are hung ho on solitude or the want of it.Because I have done that in Israel, going to the mid of sea alone, trying hard to please myself its nice, but sea needs fun.I wouldn't say I didn't enjoy dancing with random people on beach or even hopping onto local buses in Greek islands in search of the authentic local Artichokes fry(fish fry),but unless you are confident, give ‘Some places a skip’ for a better place.

6)Plan Weatherwise

You wouldn't want this to be snow covered, would you?
At Pamukkale,Turkey

Unless you are sure of being content in seeing less,as much as possible Skip countries with sea during winters. Why because,Europe can get really chilled during winters, and you might then have to carry extra luggage(jackets, sweaters, woolens) and also during winters you would be able to get onto less sites.Ferries hardly run in Greek islands during winters.Even if you get in Turkey,it gets unbearably cold. That however shouldn't stop you from venturing into common winter gateways such as France,Italy,Switzerland as these are relaxed site seeing location with much lesser activity or even better 'their summer during our winter' holiday to Australia and New Zealand. Don't worry Switzerland has snow throughout the year. You do not have to freeze in a location to be able to enjoy it.Understand a snowfall for the time being looks cool, but for a longer period of time, just messes with your plan, bang on!

7)Be Cautious,but open up:

Tanned yet loving every bit of it.
With my lovely host Marietta in Mykonos Island,Greece
who gave me simple map, picked me from my ferry venue and dropped me at the airport.

Turkey so far, remains one of my favorite countries I have visited. It’s beautiful. In terms of travelers convenience for both solo and backpackers and groups, its very well managed, friendly and even budget friendly,I liked it even better than Switzerland.Italy and Switzerland are expensive yet quite backpack-able.

To each his own,but every country has a downside. The downside with Turkey is ‘Beware of Turkish Men’.I say to all solo female travelers travelling to Turkey. In Turkey,as long as I was there for 10 days 3 days solo, and with 7 days with a friend,I would everyday hear‘ Are you a dream or are you for real?’,’Can I have your Facebook madam’ ,and even hindi taglines 'Jaati hai tu kaha' and even 'will you marry me' it came as a natural way of wooing a girl but it came so often even on the roads that you must be aware of that.I would be writing a post shortly on Turkish men and their ways, but sadly none of the blogs have mentioned it.

Although we did indulge in random banter for fun's sake, the attention every time was making us smile,do not in any case, listen to your heart and give in,because they know they are handsome and they are very direct with their words. That doesn't mean, you mustn't make friends when abroad.I made beautiful Singaporean couple friends in Greece who I had dinner with.I made friends in Italy and Paris as well.Even Turkey would give you great friends,if you are cautious and know which way to go.

8)Some places may give the ‘not so IT’ factor you have to deal with:

Racism at some places,well yes!
But just move on..and enjoy the place.

I loved Italy.Spending 5 days in Italy was so less a time.If I had to go one place again, that would be Italy. However,it came with its own share of ‘not so IT’ factor. For the first time,I faced Racism in Italy. So when travelling in a packaged tour, you wouldn't be knowing if there is anything as such, but when travelling alone, there are things you might face. One of the statement which I took as a pinch of salt was when bargaining for a cloth was“Go back to India or Pakistan, your home land,we don’t sell cheap and low quality stuff”.The attitude was no rude, that it spoilt a couple of minutes of my otherwise cool vacation. And this wasn't the only time.

9)Skip Ryan Air:

Do yourself a favor. Next time you plan Europe, skip Ryan Air or know the terms and conditions of being in it.These are super low budgeted airlines, which comes first in the search engine.I had booked them, because I thought they would be the best. However,Ryan air has these weird rules, that will scratch your head.Venice didn't have a printing counter, that meant you have to check in your own luggage, book your seats and deal with going forward to it.The airport of Ryan air had me hoping from several islands in Venice at the middle of the night and taking a bus, that meant spending whooping 3 hours to get to the airport.

The airport of Paris where the Ryan Air lands is in countryside(intact the airport is dedicated for Ryan air) and takes around 15 euros to go to the city after you land and around 1.5 hours.I had to pay 70 euros extra for not printing my ticket at Turkey, when all they had to do is print on my confirmation of booking which I had print of.After these mishaps,I would say best take a train or a flight which is not Ryan Air. Also, these low carrier airlines do not have luggage free. And we cannot travel without luggage. So even if you want a 15kg check in,you would have to pay 15 euros.

10)Plan Your Stay:

I loved my stay at all the hostels.I haven’t tried Airbnb, but I have tried Bnb’s and I would say they are my second choice if I want my piece of relaxed mind to crash in.However still,I would highly recommend hostels.Greece has the best hostels with kitchenette, bar at terrace, fun activities. It might be a little off for you to live in with 7 men(or women) at a 8 bed dorm, but these are the places were you find friends, you know the best ways to travel in budget, and they are not creepy as it sounds to us Indians. It is very similar to living in hostels in colleges where people mind their own business in their very own good way.So bar hopping and dancing with 5 euros is what I have done in Greece thanks to hostels. Most of these hostels have free breakfast.

When in hostels, take your own toiletries or buy it from the local store nearby because sometimes its not there.Get your own towel, some hostels may not have it.Luckily both my hostels at Greece had it.Since I wanted to enjoy my stay at the islands more in Greece,I had booked boutique hotels which were very very beautiful.

In Rome,I stayed at Roma Scout Center where I felt, like I was in Scouts.I had to give keys down and had a common bathing space separate for girls and boys which too as I had hoped otherwise was a pleasant experience.

11)Take Less Luggage:

Roll and put it.This was my travel checkin bag.
Do carry sunscreen. The sun in Greece is sharp.

The last thing you would want is drag your luggage everywhere. When I traveled first time to Scotland,I had a whooping 21 kgs to carry around.Hopping into trains would often require an attempt more than once which I was more often than not helped by people with kind stares. The trick to this what I have learnt is,you can still carry all your clothes, provided its lightweight plus a jacket which you can wear while at airports.Carry clothes which can couple up in layers.Usually the domestic flights in Europe has weight limit of 15 kgs,so be aware of that if you are taking internal flights. The penalties at Europe is much much higher than what we give in India. So even a kg extra can cost you 20-25 euros.Best thing is take what’s essential, skip what’s garbage. If you travelling for a month and a half or more, you can also wash your clothes and dry.If you plan every day, take your dress accordingly for each day.I don’t because I usually carry 2-3 more alternatives, but that’s indeed the way.

12)No Place is as Safe and As Unsafe:

We all have in mind that Europe is the ultimate destination with no crime rates which is not true.I agree, you may find yourself more ‘free to do’ in Europe. However with recession, came the high crime rates.Greece and Paris are notorious for pick pocketing. While during my trip to Greece,I know two stories that happened right away in the metro of Athens, where one of my hostel mates passport and wallet were stolen who had to make several trips to the embassy afterwards, and another a guy’s wallet was stolen which he complained to Athens police but got a stern reply ‘It happens everyday’.I didn't face pick pocketing in Paris but the constant announcement in metros and stories online says it happens quite often in Paris too.In fact as a matter of thumb rule,do not leave your luggage unattended in any part of the world. Safety lies in your hands,be little more cautious when travelling abroad.

13)Managing Money

Me and Namita having a blast at a local pub in Turkey
For free!

As you read my posts on Paris, you would understand what I am talking about. While Travel card is widely accepted everywhere in Europe, its advisable to carry part cash. Why so is because,if you plan to wander places which are off beat you might not have the facility to swipe the card.Usually carrying small denominations is recommended,as you would need it in metros(1.5 euros),buses and other modes. For shopping and everywhere else, you can try your luck with the travel card. When you board a bus in Paris or Italy, validate your ticket at the validating machine in the bus, they do not have ticket conductors. You can backpack Europe in as small budget as you would want to,or more, depending on how you want to travel.Europe isn't a big deal if you are sure of your budget. It’s easier to overdo budgets with the currency, but with planning,it can be done.

14)Be Flexible with plans

The idea here is to get a hint and know in detail. However, while travelling you may come across people who inspire you for a new place or places which are just random somewhere on the map.Keeping your gut feeling intact, follow your heart, sometimes the new places are more beautiful than the ones in map.And many a times, the local buses, trains go to these places.Take calculated risk while travelling keeping the above factors in mind.I have taken buses worth Euro 1.5 inside the islands in Greece,,just because somewhere I liked the name and had the desire to explore. It hardly took me 20 minutes to figure out bus routes at the stand and places it takes me too.Adding onto a quick conversation with the one who gave me tickets,I got to know which places has what exactly.

15)Vegetarian or Non Vegetarian:Most Often You'll Find A Way

Swiss Alpen Macaroni consisting of Potatoes Macaroni Cheese Onion
And with Apple Sauce

Our parents have literally fed us with a concept that most often foreigners survive on meat or rather beef, and finding a vegetarian food is a struggle out home which is crap.I myself,am not a vegetarian, but an occasional non-vegetarian(I love chicken, fish etc etc but not always and definitely not on every meal in a country!)But having traveled to 6 European countries this year,I can confidently say 'Vegetarians will face no issues anywhere'.You can always ask the cook of the restaurant to make a vegetarian dish.Better still, you can do your research, make a list of vegetarian places and go hunting! So whether in Turkey or in Greece or in Spain,it's no big deal. Most of the restaurants have vegetarian dishes.Even in place like 'Scotland in UK' I found so many vegetarians!

If you are specific on having Jain food during your tour,go for packaged tours. If you are non-vegetarian be flexible on what you are getting because we may be used to chicken and fish, the world may have something different to offer.

16)Respect culture

I see it often that when we go abroad,we have a tendency to overdo our want for the teeny meeny, considering its Abroad and its Europe. However,in places like Turkey which still is very open except few sites where the shoulders need to be covered, respect that.Respecting their culture means instant connect.

17)Language No Barrier

It was when my dad went to Paris many many years back,he said the English speaking folks are not talked to sweetly.Considering my experience in Paris now,I would say if people don't understand your language, its fine, talk in sign language. If they seem not interested, move on.Learn a bit of a language if you have to,there are small little language book in every place most often on roadside,or you can learn on Internet.Sometimes talking in two different languages can be quite a funny experience like I had with a Croatian lady in Switzerland.

18)Yes,There are needy people everywhere

Now as per my assumption,I had never assumed in European countries people who are needy perform on road (like music, dance, act) and expect a money back.In Turkey at Taksim square you would see beggars even. The good part is these guys perform, while at India we are for free give and take.

19)Expecting Europe To Be Washed Clean is a mistake

The first impression you would have of Paris is Mumbai(a better version). The second impression the not-so-clean metro gives is 'Is it really what we see on the Facebook pages'.During evenings,Athens would have jammed packed metros. Is that the Europe you knew about? These places are still beautiful but whitewashed cleaned, not so much.Accept this fact and go with an open mind.

20)Do Not Ever Go Just By Photographs:

The Internet is full of beautiful photographs isn't it?But sometimes it happens, when you go to a place, you realize that it isn't even half as beautiful as the photograph.I have seen thin waterfall shots taken with so much grace, that I too get inspired. And when I go there,I find it that the picture wasn't as the reality is.Capri in Italy has beautiful photographs but one of my friend was advised to not go there by a local because they said it was dirty.

So,my last word of caution is:

Do not plan just by watching Photographs.

You have Google. Do an image search.Look at other pictures and then decide on your own.Videos speak volumes.Watch videos which are not time-lapse or heavily edited, but the ones which are uploaded by amateurs or blogger who want to show you the real picture. So hoping that, you learnt a lesson or two on backpacking Europe.

We’ll have more series on planning travel, but these are just the basics before I write about my trip to Turkey,Greece and Italy.I see a lot of posts, randomly scattered online, and none helped me plan my trip, which was rather sad. But I hope this one helped you in little understanding of travelling alone. If it did, your sweet comments will make my day.

Backpacking Paris is already there on my site.Till Turkey and Greece and Italy comes up published in detail, tada!

eBay Republic Day Parade 2015 : Deals,Top 5 Wishlist

My first e-commerce love started with eBay years back.I would fondly look at the categories,I liked. That time, those things were new to me.The whole concept of buying from eBay was ‘not so what I was used to’.Slowly my brother started telling me I got this from ebay or that from ebay. In fact during these years,he gifted me a gorilla pod,a kind of a mini - tripod which was small yet can be attached anywhere. As mom started Tanjore,I wondered if I could be one of these sellers, selling her paintings.I went through profiles, couple of reviews of people who were sellers.I didn't know then,If I can have a wish list or if deals will make way to new and interesting things at my home.

So when I got to know about eBayRepublicDayParade2015  for this Republic Day and around,I was excited. As a Travel,Adventure and Fashion blogger;I always had a lack of certain things I could have got but didn't .Like as simple as weighing machine at home.I have one, that checks my weight : The big round one with digitals .But I wished I had a smaller compact version that I could carry to the airports or while I travel.

You can check the deals here

So here’s my wish list containing 5 things I loved from the #eBayDealParade

1)Hand Suspension Weighing Scale:

Airports can be really messy with all your local shopping dumped in your checked in.As you walk in confidently at the counter, you are caught.Madam, two kg weight extra, pay this much.In that chaos, you wonder if you could stuff in your hand baggage balancing the extra.Wish you knew it before.Since it happened with me many many times over,I’d rather prefer to have a compact Hand Suspension Weighing Scale after I pack everything at my hotel. The best part is it doesn’t cost much and it’s so useful while travelling.

2)Universal Car Windshield Mount:

I saw this first time in my brother’s car.Damn,it’s an essential.I really think it must be part of accessories while buying car.As and when we use google maps while driving, which we often do so,its annoying to hold your cellphone for the other person who’s driving.More so,its even more irritating holding it yourself when you are driving.Keeping in mind the safety and other factors, this is a must device right on my wish list

3)Portable Laptop Foldable Etable:

Portable Laptop Foldable ETable e Table 2 USB Cooling Fans on eBay,Rs 543

I have often got these 24 hours sitting in front of laptop syndrome due to heavy work.Since I do not have a separate place to keep it while I work on it,I use it while sitting on couch or sitting on bed.How unhealthy is it,is what I recently read. But I don’t like the idea of sitting in a traditional table chair. Now with this fold able stable things will get simpler. My laptop fan won’t get hot due to cushion of bed or couch and I can easily work from anywhere.Plus since it's fold-able you can carry anywhere.

4)Sony 2TB External Hard Drive:

                                      Sony HD-E1 2.5 inch 2 TB External Hard Drive on eBay,Rs 6881

I am a huge fan of these hard drives.I can keep all pictures and videos which consumes lot of space in my hard disk.Makes my laptop slow and grumpy. So this one’s out of sheer need.I suggest to everyone, the only thing that will keep your laptop working easy,is transfer load to these 2TB ones data storage Hard drive. If do not have so many pictures and videos like me,you can always get 1TB or 500 gb for a backup, just in case your computer crashes someday.

5)Computer Speaker:

I love these small speakers. It’s like you can carry it while you are travelling and while at your hotel room you can play it in volume you want to.As for me,I love dancing and want my sound to be clear and loud. Also,if you are organizing home party or camp out somewhere, these are must haves.

With this,my wish list of 5 items for this Republic day is over. What do you think will your wish list be,out of the amazing eBay deals that as per your need, you want it right now!

As the tapping footsteps matched with the sinful rhythm, some left us asking for more, some made us in deep thought of how people all over the World and in India celebrate;I almost forgot I was in #Haryana India, but it felt like I was in some part of Spain having a Carnival.

Holiday Dance from Kazakhstan at 28th Surajkund International Crafts Mela 2014

We Indians, almost equate Mela with a certain disorganised, chaotic and cheap crowd, this one was one of my best event I attended last year but forgot to write. After having been to International Kite festival,Gujarat and Red Bull Flugtag,Bangalore which were utter disappointment ; I highly recommend it to everyone who lives in Delhi or in Haryana as a short gateway.I remember it took us an hour to reach there and we barely had any expectations but this one exceeded all our imaginations.

Most of you must have visited Surajkund Crafts Mela before it was recognised internationally 2 years back;but go again to witness the cultural extravaganza from all over the world with colourful Flowers,Shapes,Stalls of different countries and Acts.

Starting from today till mid Feb,this ones a steal! Watch the video below :

The 18 countries participating in this year's event include: Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan and Bangladesh; Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Tajikistan, Kuwait, Qatar, Thailand, Uganda and Syria. The mela will be open til February 15 from 10.30 am-8.30 pm.

There are dances and acts by various countries and local dances too.As in India,we all know that different tribes, different religions, different age groups celebrate festivals, some of which takes back to ancient tradition. In fact, they are the ones who are preserving the tradition as it supposed to be preserved.

Inspite of the crowd,it wasn't a cheap 'Mela' we are used to thinking about.
at Surajkund International Crafts Mela 2014

A rare example of it was a festival from Chattisgarh presented by a tribe who celebrate it during the Bhadav month on the days of Ekadashi after keeping Vrat(Fast).Another was a popular folk dance from Himachal. The best was the formation dance from the group of Rajasthan.

Himachal Takes Center stage
At Surajkund International Crafts Mela

The rest were folk dances of different tunes but each tune told a different story,a different celebration. Some had theme such as ,as in every state people from poor communities and tribe strive to work hard to earn their bread, they during the evening celebrate their work with the tunes they humm.It was fascinating to know and more fascinating to hear them. Now we know, where from the Bollywood gets inspired.

At Surajkund International Crafts Mela 2014

Internationally, there were performances from Africos,Sri Lanka,Kazakhstan,Kyrgyzstan and many other countries. It felt like Alice in Wonderland for some where steps were so cute that we didn’t even step out for a moment. The traditional instrument of Africos is Kora which is a string instrument and they perform solo within their community and also world over. These instruments are made at home. While Sri-Lanka celebrated the process of catching a fish ‘a la maji re’ ,many other countries had Sufi tunes and music that took center stage.

Musical Instrument 'Kora' by Africos

These performances happen from morning till the evening.Apart from dance,we have plays and other acts.So in case if you are planning Surajkund, keep one day for performances and another day for Shopping.

You thought that was possible?
well there were many such formations with dance.
at Surajkund International Crafts Mela 2014

One day just isn’t enough.

Coming back to stalls and crafts, most of the Delhites, consider Delhi Haat to be there one stop shopping stop. The stalls in Surajkund International Crafts Mela are from all over the world ranging from our states to the countries we never know craft wise.Even Pakistan and Afganisthan participated.Even though I kept my shopping time for half a day,I could see so many interesting stuff to bring back that I later regretted why I came on the last day.I got embroidered cushions, curtains and drapes. You get all range of products from all states and countries from Eco-friendly products to products made from cow - dung to crafts to clothes. It’s a heaven for shoppers.

Performances in Front of Food Stalls
At Surajkund International Crafts Mela 2014

One thing I didn’t like so much in Surajkund International Crafts Mela was the food.Even though there were stalls from all over, not many tasted as good. But do check the Goan stall where we had delicious chicken, and may be Rajasthan stall.By the end,I danced with the locals who were performing acts.Felt like one of them.

All in all,it’s a perfect day out with lots of things to do.So here’s my series of photo essay which will come in two parts,part1 and part2,there are so many interesting pics I am tempted to share but one blog post just won’t be enough.

Have you been to Surajkund International Crafts Fair? What are your thoughts?

I drank a shot of Ouzo on the Rooftop bar of my Athens Backpackers hostel, feeling up the fragrances of Anise, Spices and of course Alcohol as ingredients, watching the lighting at Acropolis I visited the other day, chatting with travelers from Israel and Australia at night.Never In my life had I tasted a shot which was standalone sufficient. It was cold and it kept me warm.

Athens TBEX Afterparty : Where I also met another fellow Indian Blogger

As I danced my way in one of the Bar Hopping Trails of my hostels,I realized there’s more to Athens than the History which is most often talked about.Sadly I didn't carry my cellphone that night and hence except fond memories that lasted till 3 o' clock in the night,I cannot upload pictures here from the various pubs we went to.I don't even remember their names but know that the Tour that started from my City Circus hostel went around pubs and bars and live bands in Monastiraki.

Greece is a delight for party goers
While Mykonos Island is listed top 10 best places to party in the world.
Athens too offers amazing joints to free your soul :)

One such was a pub which looked like a garage from outside but when inside was crazy! They served local beers, fusion drinks and cocktails. At the end we danced and danced with shots of Ouzo on another such pub just near my hostel.

City Circus Hostel at Monastiraki - Loved this one!

Athens Backpackers at Makri Street,Acropolis is awesome too!

Both City Circus and Athens Backpackers cost 22 euro per night
i.e Rs 1500 as per current conversion rate

If you thought,I would just talk about my high tales, you would be surprised to know that Athens has good food, shopping and the best hostels I have ever stayed in.I still would be talking about History in my later posts after I discuss islands, but let’s keep this lighter for time being.

For those who do not drink 'drinks',there are other plenty of options!

If you want to know why you must or mustn't visit Greece over other countries click here

/*This trip was part funded as a result of win worth Rs 1 lakh from Skyscanner. In that 1 lakh,I chose my stay and flights to Greece,France and Italy and a part of Turkey*/

My schedule for the trip was

Athens (6 days) : 2 days Athens Backpackers Hostel,4 days City Circus Hostel
Santorini(3 days)
Mykonos(2 days)

Enrolling for a free walking tour just as I landed wasn't my idea.It was only after a discussion with Greece Tourism,I got to know that there is a Voluntary Group consisting of Greek locals(Athenian) who takes around the city for free out of their passion to highlight the facets of the city we are interested in. Called This Is My Athens Greeter Program” a series of mails followed before my visit as part of interaction,on what I like and what I don’t.Do I like history or culinary or culture or shopping? What time would be suitable for me as this was for 3 hours.

One thing you'd find plenty in Greece are the "CATS"

This time,I decided to do history on my own and leave the rest to the insiders. You don’t often get across people of same age who explains the city as it is supposed to be seen. Not much is written about Athens on internet either.

Greek signboards and names of dishes are different from our names or the words we are used to using.Written in Greek you may find it unfamiliar at first but slowly you would blend in!Greece doesn't have a language problem though, almost 90% of them understand and speak English. The signboards too are written in English, just that Greek names are very difficult to pronounce and read for us.

Reaching Athens:Flight To Hostel,Local Public Transport

View from Athens Airport
The Escalator is to the Metro

I flew in Athens,Greece from Istanbul,Turkey by Ryan Air.Now many of us,when we travel,we have a certain image of a foreign land where Tour Agents welcome at Airport or else we live in the first fear that reaching our booked hotel would be hell.

For those who are first timers to Schengen countries, refer to my earlier post on how to obtain Schengen visa.I got my visa in 11 working days for Greece.

Athens Metro - The most convenient of all

Greece has a great public Transportation. There is no reason why you mustn't take it.It’s so well-organised at all hours that even for a while If I was alone anywhere I wouldn't feel that I would get lost or reaching home was impossible.

There are two ways to travel from Airport to City Center i.e Syntagma Square. Syntagma in Greek means arrangement and is the central square of Athens. Syntagma Square is also where all the protests happen, when they happen. We did witness one of the silent protests but nothing that could harm us in any way.

Inside Syntagma Square Metro Station:You would see this if you happen to look up!

Either you can take an Airport Express Bus or a Metro.Since I was staying at Athens Backpackers And Studios at Makri Street,Acropolis initially;I had to take X95 Bus to Syntagma Square costing me around 5 euros and then walk a little for about 7 minutes down to my hostel.During my prior mail exchange with hostel,I had asked for an early check - in and directions to the hostel.

Metro lines

The another option was more simpler. From Athens Airport take a Blue line metro to Syntagma costing 8 euros and then a Red line metro (towards Helliniko) to Acropoli which is the first station.Initially,I thought since I have to change Metro lines,It might be a little complicated but as I stayed on for days;I realized metros are the best mode of travel in Athens.Even if you wouldn't know which line to take, you can always ask at the counter or follow the numerous boards that tell you the route and the stoppages. In fact the first and the last time I used the bus was from the Airport to Syntagma just when I landed and then used the metro from Syntagma to Acropoli because I wasn't so keen on walking. Both Bus(on your left from Metro),Metro(Center) And Taxi Stand(on your right from Metro) are at Syntagma Square.

You can buy Metro card valid for 24 hours,48 hours etc worth 3 euros,10 euros ,depending on how long are you travelling and then unlimited travel by every mode of transport including buses, metros are included in that.If you travel individually without buying passes within city(except Airport),It would cost you euro 1.4 for 1.5 hours of travel on all modes that includes metros, trams, trolleys and buses.

The last metro leaves at 11:30 pm and first goes at 5:30am.It takes 40 minutes to reach Syntagma from Airport and the Airport train goes every 20 minutes.Buses run 24/7.

Just as a word of precaution:

Unless you have no other option(no trains,no buses),avoid taxis or know their rate beforehand from locals or hostels.A few of them are cons and they might take you on a merry go round around the city and you wouldn't even know until the bill comes because from every point you would see Acropolis on top.I took a taxi from Syntagma once,as it was raining and I had no other option, but wasn't cheated as was told. The guy turned out to be nice and started conversation with me on being 'Indian in Greece'.Well that's another story but..

This was advised from my Athens backpackers hostel who told me in case if you do not want to walk from Syntagma and take a taxi anytime to Hostel,it would cost you 4-5 euros,no more than that.

 Wandering in Athens:First Glimpse

Everytime I go Europe,I pinch in the bubble of 'Non-Bland' food
The European food in every European country is delicious
Except if you know what to eat!

Gyros and Souvlaki : Both very yummy and easily available.

I arrived at Athens Airport 5:30 pm and after collecting luggage and stuff, was in hostel at around 8pm. The first glimpse of Athens at night was a surprise for me.I expected Greece to be more expensive than Turkey. But Athens had similar rates as Turkey.Food for 1 euros,Shopping for 1-2 euros,It was quite a city on budget. I was excited as I was staying near to Acropolis, the historical site.Except if you visit islands,Athens is quite reasonable.

Turkey and Greece have very similar food
In Turkey this is called Simit,in Greece this is called Koulouri
It's a road side food made of sesame.

Baklavas and Delights in Greece,yes!

So as I walked out of Acropoli station I asked a few locals about Makri Street,I landed up with three guys who joined me on my walk to Athens Backpackers. On reaching there,we got to know that this one was full but they had another Athens Backpackers chain just a street down on which our booking was done.As I reached my hostel,I was hungry. The search for food didn't take me long, there are plenty of shops on the way.So I grabbed a pizza for a euro, and with the first bite thought of my pleasant sleep that I was going to have that night.

Here Fish Cafe with Athens Backpackers
Both my hostels served breakfast as complimentary

At hostel,I always request a lower bed if available.Sometimes it is,sometimes it isn't. But that’s OK. Just for the first timers, depending upon your convenience you can choose all female or mixed dorm while booking at the hostel. I have stayed at both, doesn't make much of a difference as everyone comes to just crash in when tired and make friends.

Later I found a relief to my hunger every time I was outside.I would munch in Chicken Gyros,Souvlaki with Grilled Pita,Greek salad and Greek yogurt whenever I felt like as they were readily available almost everywhere , were affordable for 1 or 2 euros and were yummy.

Wandering in Athens: Talking Home

After I had landed in Greece,my Turkish Sim wasn't working. Most of these hostels have free WiFi. The best way to talk is either through Skype or Viber connecting to Internet.I used Viber mostly.

Getting a Sim with top up is a costly affair. It can cost you anywhere between 15-20 euros plus an extra for Nano Sim(which I have). So,I chose to not recharge. The cheapest of the lot is wind, which was right next to my hostel.

If you do not feel like talking over WiFi,you can get Matrix Sim card from back home for Europe which comes out cheaper.

Next morning,I woke up lazy because I had quite a few days in Athens to spend.Downstairs,we were getting fish and chips, buns and burgers, which was quite nice breakfast as part of the hostel.

Walking Athens:This is my Athens

Vicky from 'This Is My Athens' takes me to Bubble Tale

As I exited towards the National Garden Exit on Syntagma Square,I couldn't recognize Vicky from “This is my Athens” who was supposed to take me around. My phone wasn't working. And so I reached the nearest shop where I made a call on request to her number. She told me she’s just there in white and blue.May be we missed each other.I turned around, and we exchanged hugs.

Syntagma Square has a parliament in front.Walking down the streets will lead you to couple of interesting shops on both sides. This can also be reached while walking from Monastiraki metro station. In fact,my second hostel was in Monastiraki and I loved walking down. So,let’s see what “This is my Athens” got me to.

The musical instrument Laterna played in Greece

‘Laterna’ used to be the old musical instrument still played at many parts in Athens. In fact as part of the activities by the needies in Greece,I saw many playing this one!As we walked towards the interiors,Vicky pointed me towards a church which I said to that I wasn't much interested in visiting these even though I did peek in as I knew I could any day come to them but mainly the more cultural and food part of Greece.Take your time, show me the best hideouts,I said to her.

Eggplant Dishes in Greece are a must have
One such in Mousakka.

So here we were next. The Eolou street where we have the Bubble tale,we get Yogurt mixes with Thai fruit bubbles which was quite awesome.

Ta Serbetia was where we get the best Sweets .Evripidou street was the road with the spices.

Mirch : The Indian Takeaway

Avramiotou s.i.x dogs cafe

The lfestou street had the flee market from where I got a jacket worth 5 euros. Ermou street had all the brands. We will discuss shopping in the next post. One of the places which we went had a secret garden with the cafe in Avramiotou s.i.x dogs.

Central Fish And Meat Market of Athinas Varvakeios

Since Greece is by the sea,we have Fish and Meat as part of their cuisine. So Athinas Varvakeios was where the central fish and the meat market was located. It was where I met an Indian at one of the shops, who was equally excited to see me.He told me if I needed any help or assistance I can always get in touch with him.

Eridanos river flows below the Monastiraki Square and standing there you could see
a thin stream of water flowing

As we crossed Monastiraki,Vicky pointed towards the section that still has river flowing underground. The Eridanos was the third in size river of ancient Athens in terms of water flow. The Eridanos river flows below the Monastiraki Sqaure and you can look from above and see the water flowing.

Soon in further blogposts, you will see full travel video of Greece and Islands,my experience on what to do and what to avoid and a lot more.

Bursting The Myth:Paris And Misconceptions

"I stand defeated in the air of nostalgia on the memories of my first #KissOfLove I ever had, the golden lights beaming with glory in rhyme as if creating the perfect setup, the Eiffel Tower witnessing my wild emotions cautioning me of wind that might sweep me away and reminding me that I have crossed my wicked teen age and at the same time discarding it as just another routine feeling and I stand there still smitten by ‘love in the air’ as I swear to come here again."

Paris Is Not Off the Beaten But Deserving

As one of the speakers in TBEX Europe 2014 said that “off the beaten" is one of the misused terms we have heard lately and repeatedly used. I wonder what brings me back to the places which are not off the beaten but deserving. Paris I had thought before as monotonous; with probably nothing much to see apart from the glittering Eiffel Tower and I had almost made up my mind to skip it for it is the place jaunted or rather haunted by honeymooners. But as my luck had it ,I could not only experience half a day which left me craving for more ,I also took my Royal Jordanian flight which I loved for food and services back to Delhi. It's the feeling of merriment and class,  that makes Paris a little different

Bursting the Myth: Paris is Non-Friendly

As beautiful as it gets,Notre Dame from Seine River Cruise
@tourcourtesy Paris City Vision.
Can language be a barrier to enjoy the sight,I don't think so...

'Be careful, sometimes non-verbal signs have double meanings in different languages'said a French gentlemen sitting next to me in the airport metro on conversation with 'How people in France aren't  always as been portrayed worldwide, and how they have helped me with figuring out directions with signs if they didn't know English'

As one of the families from Singapore I met in Venice told me on their trip to Paris "In Paris, people have a little high nose, but they are nice, and that's how they are". I have had heard and overheard in India, people warning me on their tales on how they have been misguided when they spoke in English, was not something which I faced in my half a day visit to Paris.

I felt, people in Paris were not sugarcoated polite but on the face as if they prefer to speak 'Please take me to' as 'take me to'and that's by choice and as the family said "that's how they are".I was helped everywhere, including hostels to metros to Paris Tourism kiosks to even general people on road and my tales tell a different story than the usual. If you feel that you are not been paid attention to, move on. There are better people everywhere.

Bursting the Myth: Paris is Unbearably Expensive

Smart Place Paris Entry
Adding a fun stay need not be expensive to your itinerary
Plus you have bike tours, pub crawls and many other things you can be part of!

As Indians, we tend to calculate every penny we spent, sometimes even converting every cent we saved. Sometimes the ways, we travel, makes our journey expensive. And some places deserve that luxury. Now depending on if you are travelling solo, or with friends, or with partners, Paris can burn a happy hole in your pocket, or you can conveniently live like any other European city. When visiting places of interest, there is not much you can do to minimize entry costs, but you can always minimize travel costs of getting there.
As a matter of fact, the closer you get to the monuments and the likes, the higher your stay cost becomes but you save on travel time.

The dorm room I shared with three other girls
And this one had a bathtub yey!

For me I stayed at a pretty cute hostel called "Smart Place Paris" at Gare Du Nord, and I could conveniently take metros worth 1.5 euros and buses which weren't expensive to any place. I also liked the neighborhood as It had railway station, lot of eateries and basically reasonable stuff to shop around like a gown for 10 euros which I missed.I also felt for me, half a day was unfair, Paris surely deserved days. But thanks to Paris City Vision and Atout France, that I could do the best of what I have got in those hours in a very well organized way, and so can you. Will write about it in next post.

I felt Paris has so much character than just Eiffel Tower or Disneyland and it certainly is about slowly adapting to the groove that Paris has which many of us miss it during our first visit.

Like for example, do you know what are the famous food joints in Paris and what are the festivals that France(in general) celebrates?

Bursting the Myth: Paris has a confusing metro

For a first timer,Paris is organized
but has different layers to it like water waves.

I wouldn't say that it is not true for a first timer, it is heavily organized so much so that for a person who landed and just have a day might get confused on metro a line,b line, yellow line, blue lines, over line, under line. The platforms are huge, and the people are busy.

"For a moment, I felt I could conveniently fit myself in the character of Kangana in Queen movie, knowing where to go but not knowing what might take me there. I would stare at the stop names inside the metro lest I miss mine and I was heavily under doubt if anyone here would help me if anyone else snatches my bags"

Happy part is help is available everywhere. When buying ticket, ask where you have to get down ,so how can you reach there ?Ask at the Paris Tourism Information center which I found at many of the places in Paris and voila, it’s no longer as confusing!

Bursting the Myth: Be Careful of Your Personal Belongings

Flashing your euros is a strict no no and so is bringing your valuables and not paying attention. Your lackadaisical attitude can cost you money, passport and valuables! But then again, it isn't as unsafe.

Paris what I have had heard from several sources was that it has an image of notorious pickpockets in busy hours. In metros there are constant announcement to take care of your personal belongings. T here are incidents that these people work in groups, and the moment you skip your attention, they either form a group in front of you or they work themselves out to take things off your backpack or pretend that something fell over, and they take your stuff nothing which I faced or my immediate peers did.

But as a general rule, be careful of your belongings anywhere in Europe and all over, so that you enjoy your vacation and at the same time be responsible of what you own.

With this starting note, we are going to delve down into "what to do in Paris in half a day" and excuse me further if my lines are poetic ahead because that's how it's meant to be in my next post.

/*This was my solo trip but without the help of Paris City Vision and Atout France, the trip would have been incomplete rather impossible*/

Beautiful Athens:The Side You’ll Love:This Is My Athens

Me,replicating the Art!

The Graffiti surrounding the area was epic. Each with detail that hinted a story ,a theme ,  a situation. On being asked on why was these Graffiti made as it is,I was told by Vicky that initially it depicted the Socio-economic state of the city. However as more and more work and visual art was recognized coupled with 2004 Summer Games, the country’s first international graffiti festival was organised where a competition was held for the best Graffiti art on a stretch of 5 km. Each had a name,a theme and an author. To know more click here:

In the recent years, religious theme have also been painted as part of Graffiti by various artists. Many of the mosques of the past have been converted into museums in this area.

As you walk down to Psiri(Pysiri) Street, you would see lamps of different shapes and sizes in the street hung over with wire connections.

Psiri Street

You would wonder why that is to which Vicky from 'This is my Athens' said,it was once this area was unsafe, there were crimes, theft as there were no lights. Then one fine day,the people from the street decided to reuse their lamps and strings of different lamp shades followed. It’s an interesting street to watch for.And it looks fab when lighted.

Later,I was surprised to know Vicky doesn't use social media nor like it.Wish I had a job like her :) Travel without social media would be a great relief.Still searching for one such job that takes me off computers but make me travel :P

I wonder what message it conveys

I highly suggest City Circus Hostel for this one in Monstiraki. This is another great hostel where I stayed for longer time. You would literally surround yourself with Graffiti. They give you the best breakfast with many varieties of Jams and Jellies and Pickles and Flakes and Tea etc. They have many activities in their menu including Walking tour to Bar hopping to Cooking Greek Food to Sightseeing to Trip to Delphi and nearby places. So bar hopping was with City Circus. The gal at the reception is a bubbly young gal who has all the energy in the world. She accompanies you on trips or bar hops.If you happen to be there, say my 'hi' to her.Fantastic experience.

Monastiraki means ‘small monastery’ and it received its name due to small monasteries which were situated here some hundreds of years back.

Shops

And some churches where photography wasn't allowed inside

With this my first two introductory post to Athens comes to an end. We’ll have more coming up,as and when we go.We’ll also explore islands,do some shopping, hike to the mountains,go to red beach, black beach and visit the historic sites.By the end of it,you would know A-L of Greece, why not A-Z because I missed so many islands still waiting to be discovered.May be sometime this summer.I wish I had few more days.

On 21 January 2015, Mr. Laurent Fabius, French Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Development, along with world-renowned 3-Michelin-starred Chef Alain Ducasse, officially launched the “Goût de France/Good France” project. This special initiative aims to celebrate French gastronomy worldwide, with 1300 chefs serving a “French-style dinner” on March 19, 2015, on all five continents.

Celle-Saint-Cloud_copyright-Maedi-Frederic-de-Lamure

A committee of international chefs, led by Alain Ducasse, selected and unveiled the final list of restaurants participating in Goût de France/Good France”. They scrutinized proposals submitted by restaurants all over the world, which prepared a menu representative of French gastronomy:

FOOD_BENOIT_NY_copyright-Pierre-Monetta

•             A French traditional aperitif (Champagne and gougeres -stuffed or not- or Iced cognac and foie gras)

•             A cold appetizer and a hot appetizer

•             A fish or shell-fish course and one meat or poultry course

•             Vegetables to represent the values of healthy eating and environmental responsibility

•             One or a selection of French cheeses

•             One chocolate dessert

•             French wines and one French liqueur

Among the finalists, 48 restaurants are located in India. With this massive participation, India ranks 4th in the world, after Italy (96), Japan (61) and Brazil (55), just ahead of the United States (46). It highlights the importance attached to gastronomy in India, as well as in France, gastronomy being part of both countries’ identity.

SBI Life Insurance:What Makes A Great Dad

Today as I watched this soulful commercial by SBI Life Insurance,it reminded me how great Dad’s are and how precious their little words of caution, their love, their support are.Even in aggression or lack of time, there is love. They are and always be our best and first well-wisher.They make us learn, they make us grow. This commercial takes you to a life of an Army officer who is in a sort of kash-ma-kash(doubt) if he makes a #GreadDad ,very very sweet ad indeed.

Do you dislike missing your child's Parent- Teacher meeting? Do you enjoy gardening with your kids? Fatherhood is about those little joys of being present in their moments, giving them the best of life. Insure your child’s future, be a Great Dad!

Do you have one such #dad, share your stories and I am sharing mine today.

Intelligent yet Humorous
#GreatDad of Today

I watched him walk in slow yet winning steps at 7 o’ clock in the morning towards the garden when I was still sleeping in my bed, refusing to walk and follow suit but I could see from one eye his enthusiasm on separating the weed from the rest of the plants, watering each plant as if his baby at the age of almost 90,commanded strength of the years gone by.The deep wrinkles that formed around his eyes contained stories of struggles and achievement with such grace, that it would throw the new-gen to shame.Still laughing uncontrollably at jokes at the club, his now life revolved around family and friends.Whenever he would introduce me to his friends,I would hardly remember but a nod on my face would put a smile on his face.Today presenting you my favourite dad #GreadDad #nana #nanu #mymom’sdad. He seems to have all energy in the world with no regrets and grudge in life,as if it was his story we were all part of.

As we grew up,hearing stories from Mom on his achievements were part of our daily life. How contained, how poised and how chilled out his decisions have been ,impressed us all. With the thoughts of open-mindedness that I often even find lacking in my friends of even today,he adapted to the new age as if it was just another phase. When many of his age, becoming dark brooding and complaining,he still would call me to appreciate me on my work.Even with I had doubts on if I should marry or I should not when I wasn’t,he was the one,who came up to me and asked “If I love someone” I could confide and we will talk.I remember walking in jeans and frocks, and nana would never complain.Even though he would sometimes say ‘you look great in sari’.In fact,on one such occasions , my marriage album was the talk of the home,as he would proudly show it to everyone ‘see she’s looking beautiful is what he would say’.

Stories of the back then of one of my mom did share, was the car races they used to have with uncles when she was a kid.I cannot wait to think how adventurous his life could have been.Till 10 years back,he was proudly driving his ambassador, the one he considered his strength. My mom had her greatest years in her life while she grew up ,when she would wear all the fashionable clothes I can still see in her black and white pictures. Her smile conveyed the comfort she has witnessed thanks to hard work her dad had put in all through the eyes.

At this age of ‘let go’ and ‘move on’ my #GreadDad #nanu taught me values to cling to what’s right always. When my grandma suffered from severe disease before she departed,he was the one always by her side, still making jokes, always at his humorous best.Even though after her death, had been a huge setback for him,he till today talks to me,as if nothing had happened. As if life continues to be beautiful. His friends are by his side to relax him.His family to watch him smile.

I wonder if today at this age
Such great #GreadDad exist who inspire
Not only the ones
Who are their owns
But the whole generation
That respects him,love him
Despite lack of time
And want to be with him
I am proud to have one
Right in my countryside.

Top Places To Shop In Athens

As I smartly bid adieu to the Athens Happy Train the second time at two different places that moved in various areas of Athens, with popular Greek Frappe in one hand pointing towards the traditional Greek Woolen Slippers made from 100% natural sheep wool with Non Slip Leather Sole with another,I asked for the price.9 Euros was what she said.As every Asian who’s not easily convinced with the price,I walked ahead to know if she would call my name for a lesser price.India for sure had mastered my skill on bargaining, while Greece remained firm with prices.

Traditional Greek Woolen Slippers

Frappe' Coffee has become a hallmark of the post-war outdoor Greek Coffee Culture

Frappe Coffee(also called Greek Frappe or Cafe Frappe) is a Greek foam covered iced coffee drink made from instant coffee .  Accidentally invented in 1957 in the city of Thessaloniki,it is now the most popular coffee among the Greek Youth and foreign tourists. The word Frappe' in French comes from word Frapper which means to 'hit'.

The bottom of the Greek Woolen Slippers had 4 different layers to ensure comfort in walking.Every shop ahead had the same price. This was Plaka, a well - known market in Athens, a walking distance from my Athens Backpackers Hostel.

Had I not stayed longer in Athens,I would have missed patting my own back with my choice of hostels based on what I wanted or wished for, prompting me to stay at City Circus Monastiraki for longer because it was just close to everything - Shopping at one side - Acropolis on another.

Monastiraki Square

Believe me,while Plaka is popular with neat clean and narrow alleyways till the Acropolis,it is Monastraki which is the best place to shop.Areas around Monastiraki Metro Station(Square) are Pandrossou Street Market and Athens Flea Market.

Famous Shops in Athens for Souvenirs

Even if Athens is just a stopover for you, before you head to the islands,do make a trip down Monastiraki. Shopping in Greek islands is expensive and you get the same stuff as in Athens.I would still be discussing what extra do you get in Islands in my next post but for souvenirs and other small little Greek stuff,Athens should be.

 Pandroussou Street Market

Pandroussou Street Market

I wonder how many of you go to a country with an aim of knowing a country on what people eat, what do they do,how things work, how they celebrate. Pandroussou Street Market would take you to everything local.Greek coffee inspired from Turkish coffee has a different way of brewing in sand.

Greek Coffee or Ellinikos Kafes (also known as Turkish Coffee) is a method of preparing coffee.Roasted and then finely ground coffee beans are boiled in a pot(briki),usually with sugar, and served in a cup where the grounds are allowed to settle. At present,it is found in the Middle East,North Africa, the Caucasus,Bali and Eastern Europe.

A different way of making Cofee

Olives we all know are famous in Mediterranean and you get all Olive soaps, olive oils, olive body creams etc and etc for 1-5 euros.Ouzo definitely a must brought item from Greece because you get that only in Greece in bottles of 3-5-7-10 euros.

Right as you enter, you get gladiators(ladies sandals) which are very popular in Greece ranging from euro 5-15.You get Greek printed Tees starting from 5-8 euros.

Mastic is a resin popular in Greece with which liquor and cosmetics are made.Do get Mastic Spa cosmetics they are awesome.Mastika or Masticha is a liquor seasoned with mastic,a resin gathered from the mastic tree,a small evergreen tree native to the mediterranean region.

Mastika Drink

In the night, the street is lit up with musical performances and road side food and ice creams and dark beer and authentic Greek food. While we were there,as part of TBEX celebration,we witnessed Opera,Clay and Ceramic Jewelry Making Workshops.Otherwise too,its a buzzing market with lots of stuff happening everyday.

Local instruments made

Operas

Celebration

And pottery!

Athens Flea Market on the other hand is more vintage. You get all sorts of Military Apparels,Jackets,Backpacks, very old furniture, electronics, clocks, antiques, fruits and vegetables.I felt a little of Palika Bazaar in Athens Flea.

 Plaka

Plaka

A little sophisticated than the Pandroussou Street Market yet in the category of Flea is Plaka.Plaka makes a very good walk with ruins surrounding due to its closeness to Acropoli Museum and Acropolis.Plaka is also where you get authentic Greek cotton with Greek Key Print dresses also called Meander Art (20 euros) and Greek swollen slippers(9-12 euros).

Greek Key Print; Pic Source:Etsy

Gladiators in Plaka

Greek paintings and Greek souvenirs dominate the market. If you haven’t been to Monastiraki, Plaka would then be the only ‘FLEA' you get to see.

Syntagma Flea

Syntagma Flea

When there are sales and end of season discounts, you know you are at the right place at the right time. One reason I would say “Heads up” to Greece on summers is because of shopping and new fleas.I wished I came in May-June when the beach parties were on.October end was late, almost winters. Many of the people I met, overlooked this one, which was there for a few days of my visit at Syntagma Square Metro Station(inside the station).Whether it was temporary or happened many times a year,I do not know. But the set-ups looked like they were to last.

The flea market had amazing junk jewelry ranging from 1-10 euros,Greek honey, local Greek packaged food,Freshly made local food and other stuff. If hardly took me an hour to check all,but I got two beautiful rings in my visit.

In defence of Synatgma Square Silent Protest Which didn't disrupt normal routine

Sadly in this trip,my iPhone charger stopped working to which I had to go to Apple store in Athens to exchange after my visit to islands. And they did exchange! So few pictures are missing, but I hope you got the fair idea.

With this,my thirst for shopping came to an end.A little bit of it was also discussed in the first post. For those who are looking to renew their vows or bring in the romance in them again,or celebrate their first honeymoon, there is nothing better than the Greek islands where we go to next.Don’t worry we’ll come back from ferries and planes and discuss more about history and Athens. Thanks everyone :)

Nature has its own fine ways of sprinkling fairy dust to places he consider his abode or else how can anyone imagine a brilliantly whitewashed settlement over the most disastrous historical volcanic eruption in the 17th century BC that created the circular caldera where many revive their vows today.Standing there,it felt like a stolen moment of a Bollywood dance sequence with romantic track playing in the background (yes! I haven’t forgotten Khuda Jaane and songs from Bang Bang!) ,my sheer dress smiling over the bright sunshine on the coast.Tanned as well,I was badly, but who cared, the view was too beautiful to let go.If I had a paint and a brush,I would have been there for days, trying to capture as an artist.

Santorini is also called Thira.

For every trip,I have had been to in the last 3 years,I never wished so badly that I had my beau by my side, except this one.Watching over the various resorts that formed most part of the curve with many having infinity pool by the sea,It was an indulgence.Ever since, I have been to dreaming to come again with friends and family if I ever get a chance, this time in peak summer.

Warning to those, who plan to visit Santorini alone, there is and will be no better place to seal a kiss. The trio of black caldera, the lime washed homes with blue doors and windows matching with the deep blue sea just a little brighter to compliment the white home,is what sweeps you off your feet. How clean, how pristine and how exotic is what Santorini is all about.

Postcard worthy Oia(spelt eeaa)!

A place where celebrities often are spotted,a place where destination weddings happen,a place where honeymoons and anniversary celebrations is just another term used and used again several times in a day.Yes,there are very few solo travelers who come here. This time it was me and my dream to be here that kept me alive through the free flowing passion of others.

Never before I have had seen something like this,Oia

Just Landed:Athens To Santorini

My swimming pool from the Boutique and Lovely Anatoli Hotel,Fira

Yummy Homemade Breakfast spread at Anatoli.Margarita, the owner makes a wonderful host
A double room in low season costs Euro 50

I dragged myself in the dark hours of 6 am,holding in one hand the luggage I got and on another holding onto tightly my almost flying jacket resisting the wind so strong that if I had let myself loose,I would have flown a distance away some place I wouldn't have known.

Flight From Athens to Santorini - Sat 18 Oct 2014
Aegean Airlines is one of the budget airlines with remarkable service and is at par with ferry rates when booked in Advance,so I had booked in Aegean and sooner in next post you'd get to know why Ferry must be just for short distance as recommended for Budget Ferries and long distancerecommended for Cruises/BigMachines.For now,I was happy I didn't take the Ferry which I would be taking from Santorini to Mykonos in my next post :)

For once,I knew,my boutique Anatoli Hotel which I had booked at Fira and how to reach there from the Airport.Taking a convenient bus — to the Fira Bus Terminal(Euro 2.2 , 20 minutes) and walking 20-25 minutes I landed Anatoli just opposite the Santorini Folk Museum and knocked at the door with anticipation that they would let me in.Alternatively if you do not wish to walk, you can request a pick up from the Airport by the Anatoli Hotel and the transfer price costs Euro 25.

We see these at many homes in Fira

Some of which is sold is Oia

Just as I entered,I knew I made the right choice.Even though in the pictures online the swimming pool almost overlooks the sea,the one in reality had a sea to look at but wasn't so near.On request,I was a given a room with a balcony prior to my check in time. Each room gives a very lovely and comfortable look and feel as every room is built like a traditional mud house.

The breakfast was fab with different types of homemade cookies and crunches and cakes and juices and etc.The owner,Margarita was very helpful and gave me a map to help me with directions. Most of the places on the map can be reached by taking a bus from the Fira Bus Terminal which I took many times in the next 3 days.So beginning with, let’s take you to some gorgeous pictures from Santorini before we head out to villages and hike to red beach in the next post.

Every time we travel in India,it takes us through dimensions we have had missed before,a new surprise element that makes every place our home for the duration of our trip, which we choose to subconsciously compare if the past “Kulchas” were better or these are.

#Selfies on the go : Honda Mobilio #HondaWeekends Honda Hangout with Bharat,Anmol,Lakshmi and Akshay

#Punjab has been on my bucket list for long, not that this was my first time because it wasn't,I have had touch and go experience at various places in Punjab covering major sites in the past but it had always been that I wished I had somebody local who would take me around to places he/she goes than to places listed in the map.

Every trip in India begins with a choice between “The New” and “The Old World Charm” and that’s what makes travel in India exciting.Amritsar falls in the later,it never changed but every time it feels new.

Honda Weekends is an initiative by Honda Car India under a new enthusiasts program in
development known as ‘Hangout With Honda’. Honda has always been keen to know the user’s side
of the story and hence, this initiative was conceived to give enthusiasts all over India an experience
like no other.

Bearing the same thought, they organized a weekend trip to Amritsar with 4 of our best people across the blogosphere. The idea was to explore & discover what’s authentic & truly amazing about the glorious city of Punjab & areas around it - in a Honda Mobilio.

Bangalore-Delhi-Amritsar:The Journey And Chit Chat

Venturing on a group of 5 including the fun-hair-smiley-face Diwakar and crew on a Honda Mobilio,we felt that we have known each other for the longest time ever.Actually road trips are the best ways to break the ice,I wonder if anyone can keep mum on a road trip.Me and Lakshmi Sharath boarded the flight from Bangalore(and yes,I did sneak in the shoppers stop at Airport and bought the chilli earrings) and reached Delhi.

There are three ways to reach Amritsar - Flight(which had long transit hours in Delhi),Train(Which we found suitable for us) and Road(Which of course is a long drive).Since there was a time gap in between the plane and the train,we stopped for our first date with Punjab right in the middle of CP,Delhi at Punjabi By Nature.

As the destination grows closer, most of us have the tendency to feel the place in our own place.Though they both are different ideologies but still...

So that’s exactly what was happening to us.The Galoti kebabs, the Butter chicken,The Thalis and the Lassis,we got the first mojo of travelling to Punjab.Hopping onto AC Chair Car and sharing Ghost stories built the excitement further.Well,if you haven’t tried,Ghost stories from anywhere in the world, are the deal breaker, for some reason it makes everyone closer..and closer over time.

It could be the scare factor or the rare display of story telling factor that binds us in.

Passing through Ambala,Ludhiana and Finally Amritsar, our conversation had never stopped except the Chais and the Meals served on our Chair Car. Anmol supposedly the'preachy professor' shared his 'spy' stories and how and why he used to blog years back. We,imbibed in him the spirit to reboot and we said we would be the first followers...

Someones taking Swacch Bharat Campaign to the Chai cuppa

But finally at around quarter to 11pm we were where we were supposed to be.After having witnessed warm weather in Delhi,we expected Amritsar to be equal or a little less but it was cold.A jacket to all of us seemed the preferred choice.Somehow to me,Amritsar had very much of a Bangalore weather this time, warmer in the afternoons, mild cold by night.

How weather travels - I proudly can say I transported the weather to one of the northern parts of India.

Amritsar : The First Glimpse

Amritsar Railway Station:Why is it,the way it is?But its nice..

Coming back to Amritsar,Amritsar railway station is quite a different piece. It’s rather small but the structures feel like an extension of Golden Temple. In fact,at many places in Amritsar I felt the same including the Hathi Gate.It is these domes, the random gates, the golden touch, that make me wonder if it has any history attached. Not that I found any.If you know why, give me a buzz.

Painted Tricolor

Hathi Gate:I wonder how the gate got its name!

The vehicles came as a pick up to the hotel ‘Golden Tulip’ which was located just a stones throw away from Railway station.

Amritsar:The Food,The Unusual,The Colors That Kept Us Busy

In the morning,we decided to have a quick breakfast in the city.Getting into our Brand New Sparkling White Honda Mobilio,we started for our morning food adventure and little bit this and that in between.

So the city begins with its fascination for ‘Coke’.Well ‘Coke’ is everywhere! On the boards,on the hoardings,in fact I have had never seen or heard of Coke Chowk before Amritsar Happened and until Bharat pointed it out.

Coke Chowk

The funniest and the unusual part that I like and that makes me giggle about these small cities in India is ‘How important the trivialities of life are’.

What we consider regular in our world,is never a regular but always termed as ‘One of the best’ and sometimes the word stands true to what it claims.

Oldest,World Famous 'Bharwan Da Dhaba'

One such was our foodie delights in one of the oldest and famous restaurants in Amritsar called ‘Bharawan Da Dhaba’ .Aloo Kulchas with Lassi and Chole made our mouth melt in silence.Yes,when we eat yummy food, speaking and eating becomes two different entities.

Silence on the bite @ Lakshmi

Pleasure as it is called,is what it is felt. And no disturbance,I pardon,no nothing, can break our chain of solitude in silence on that bite.Teamed with oodles of butter is what makes #Amritsar such a food hub.

Pickles

And Aloo Kulcha..Need I Say more?

Actually the last time I felt in love with Amritsar was also ‘Aloo Kulchas’ near the Gurudwara, looks like my infatuation for them was never forgotten.I wish I could pack some, only if it wasn't fresh but somethings are best eaten fresh

How funny can that be 'Bade Bhai Ka Brothers Dhaba'

.I wish I could learn some recipes, how is it that every place has different Kulchas some mouth watering some not as great. How is it that Amritsar makes one of the best .‘Does it never happen that they share the recipes, has it never happened that somebody stole them”.

Grabbing our ‘Bites’ and eating them ‘Well’ as our stomach said ‘Thank You In Loud Voice’ we headed towards Pathankot.

I said TOWARDS is because I am going to share a secret you will be amused at later.Just as we were in the city of Amritsar,it exploded with such colors of ‘small town wonder’ that it wasn't a moment our camera was in.

Sugar candy

As a pit stop on random anywhere,we watched a lady with an attitude on her husband’s bike sipping onto tea in colorful Kurti and Patiala and Dupatta, oblivious of the fact that we were quite stunned to see her from a distance.Lakshmi requested her if we can take her picture and so we did.

Tashan In Amritsar

Blushes when close

Now that the attitude was gone and changed into much subtle ‘I know you caught me unaware’ blushing face.We missed her attitude for the moment but her smile filled us with joy.Her husband smiled back at us on ‘what did we find so fascinating’ yet we thanked her and said she looked beautiful. She blushed again.

Red balloons.I just said sparkling colors,didn't I?

Just then,a bunch of red balloons caught our view.We then got into our Mobilio and passing through alleys and paths of Amritsar ,we got into a chaos of the town just as we were getting into the state highway. Not that it mattered.

And Blue Turbans

#HondaWeekends Where we go,there we take you :)

After such bright and peppy colors,we needed a slow state of mind.A state of mind which takes us to freedom in the next post.So what are you waiting for, share your stories on how your trip to Amritsar and beyond had been fun. Would love to have all ears.

/*This trip of mine was with Honda Car India and Thanks To Anmol and Ayesha for accompanying us and thanks to Bharat,Lakshmi and Akshay for the trip as friends. Thanks to rest of the team including Diwakar,Harmeet.Ankit,Garvit and Dablu for the 'bites' */

Me outside the Akko Fort,on the Acre sea wall

The Israeli Food is always a search ,always an excavation ,always a look , always an interpretation we never understand because each person understands it differently. In Israel, you are never just a Jew you are either a Jew who has come from Yemen or Morocco or Iran. Some people are half Yemen and half Moroccan. The youth is a fusion of all cultures and hence the culinary scene is a mix of all.

The Yesteryear Crusader City as Buried

The Mediterranean sea crash on the thick Sandstone walls making splash as we cross the tunnels that run through underneath the Crusader city and walked fast in curious wanderlust.Captured by Crusaders, and then Ottomans and then Napoleans, this place has a past rather mischievous but beautiful.

I told you about Hindi movies in my first post
Can you see 'Aradhana','Dosti' here at Akko Market
Yes ! The world is connected.

If you remember my previous post,I talked about how we were driving towards Northern Side Of Galilee from Haifa to Acre(called Akko in Hebrew). Acre is the meeting point of the East and the West, the Old and the New,the so called cultural Israel. To check my previous posts on Israel click here:

Acre or Akko is a UNESCO world heritage site

Acre:Fish,Hummus And Knafeh

Over 5000 people in the city consisting of Arabs(75%) and Jews(25%) coexist beautifully; So much are the cultural peaceful coexistence over the years between various communities that

In 2000,all the clocks were changed and renovated having the seconds as Roman numbers, minutes and hours in Hebrew and Arab and till date remains the same.

Knafeh and Coffee in Akko

Akko has a happening food market where we get the Mediterranean fish in all its glory due to the big port. These fishes taste unlike the Sea Fish but more like a Big lake Fish as the sea on the western part is enclosed by Morocco making it a very big lake. The second famous food item in Acre is Hummus.

The third is Knafeh. Knafeh is orange in color and a classic Ramadan sweet .Knafeh is neither Israeli nor Lebanese but comes from the mountain of Galilee mostly found in the northern part of Israel and Southern part of Lebanon.

Knafeh is made of three important parts - The outer part is Goat cheese then we have Kadaif which is  strings of dough, sugared water, and little bit of carrot(not carrot flavored but carrot for the color itself),sometimes they put rose water, geranium sometimes and pistachios

Baklawas and Delights

Knafeh and Baklavas were originally eaten during the Ramadan time. Ramadan is a one month fast that Muslims have every year. The fast is from sunrise to sunset,so first thing you have after sunset is a sweet, then you will have a big feast of beef.So the Knafeh and the Baklavas were originally done in the month of Ramadan before and after. But nowadays you get it all year around in the shops.

Acre:Sacred For Muslims And Prophet Mohammed

The Mosque of Jezzar Pasha is a significant religious site for Muslims in Acre.A box(also called the sacred or the holy box) in the fenced off area( shrine ) on this mosque contains a single hair from the prophet Mohammed's beard. It is shown on ceremonies shown to public only on 27th day of the month Ramadan and 15000-20000 people come to be part of the event. It is a magnificent event each year.

Acre:The Story Of  A Carat

We measure Gold in Carat. But did you ever wonder what's the story of the present day Carat?

Spread all over Israel,Middle East and Mediterranean,is the story of the present day Carat. In these areas, there is a tree called a "Carob" tree. The Carob tree has fruit called Carob beans. The long green beans have beans/seeds inside all nearly identical in size. As ancient traders traveled around the Mediterranean and surrounding areas, they turned to the carob bean as a unit of measurement. Now Carob seeds today is used as an ingredient in chocolate.

First attested in English in the mid-15th century, the word carat came from Italian carato, which came from Greek keration meaning carob seed (literally "small horn") and potentially from Arabic qirat

The Carob Festival Is Celebrated In Israel During September.

Acre: Souvenir to Get:Carob Honey

One of the interesting souvenir to get back from Israel would be small jar of carob honey. Most of them just pick them off the tree and eat,its all over Israel and the Middle east and very commonly found.

Acre:Food Market

'Gems' in Abundance.Kids would love it!

During the end of October and the Beginning of May, most of the markets are filled with herbs specially in the Galilee and the hills around Jerusalem where farming is very very popular in local families.Driving down 5 minutes from Akko to the upper and lower Galilee you will find many kinds  of  fresh and variety of food .

Bread that Looks like our pooris..

Culinary scene in Akko is very very different.Everything is green, blossoming and fresh ingredients on display.Apart from these we have Galilee fishes,Cardamom,Chilies,Incense,Spices, different types of Bread and Antique markets you can have a look at.

Antiques

                                                                  ...And Spices

Since Israel has been conquered and re-conquered by Arabs and various communities, the culinary scene in a Akko is a mix. Also every sect of Judaism has different recipes that adds onto the culinary culture.

Markets in Akko

Guys these are not cakes but soaps..

Acre:Crusader Fortress

Such a nice idea(plant on a used shoe) at many of the homes in Akko

Close to the sea,the ruins of the Crusader fortress was a Crusaders' Royal palace and main headquarters after retreating from Jerusalem. The Knight Hall complex,The Dining Room,The Courtyard and The Prisoners hall are interesting places to visit inside.

                                                         How Acre looks like

One of the best ways to enjoy and take full advantage of Akko is to walk through the Tunnels to the Crypt where only one person can walk through at a time.

It is said that this tunnel was used by the Crusaders in order to allow underground access between the fortress and hidden armory caches.During excavations,a lot of coins, valuable items has been found. As per the map,it goes from one castle to another however one of the castles is closed and now the other side opens out in the ocean. You can also feel thin stream of water going underneath from the sides. On the other side along the sea is the fortress sea wall and the ruins.

                                                                 Lighted at its best

Opening up to the other end,we have the sea! Damn.

Now that we have little information about food and spices, tomorrow we are going for culinary adventure and have past life regression(not kidding) and taste some olives :)

Burn Your Fuel Blog

Sometimes you just need wide open spaces to find joy in a journey than the final destination, your inner voice screaming “Keep going, just keep going”.As the wind gently sweeps the hair by your side, best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you don’t even care to ask.But no matter, the road is life.

With no stiff objective as such in our minds, except we vaguely knew we were going to drive down  the new Honda Mobilio from Amritsar to Pathankot,we were bang on the road with the boys(Akshay and Bharat) taking lead turn by turn. After all,we were in a New Car - with the excitement abound.

Trying my hand for a few minutes on a Honda Mobilio

The ruffle of the plastic cover over the seat, the smell of the newness was enough to keep us happy.

The random radio screeched in the top of the voice - local ads that we swiftly changed.I chose to sit with the window view on the middle seat, eyes in eyes with people around at the rear and front, having fun at each moment. The people at the back looked quite comfortable with the wide leg gap between the seats whereas usually in other cars the back seats are always cramped.

Amritsar To Pathankot: Along The Way

How anticipated a trip turns out to be when we know the places we are going to see.But how boring unpredictable the trip turns out to be when what we thought we would reach, never came as we got mesmerized by what we saw in between.Yes,the best part about all road trips is unlike trains or planes , you can stop just anywhere.Anywhere you feel like.

Gurdaspur : A Random Stopover

South Indian in North India :)

Driving through the highway onto Dhariwal and Gurdaspur,we stopped for the Pakora & Chai stop-over at Chennai Xprs at Nashera Majja Singh where we played with the two dogs who were tied by the swing and had our pakodas. The name was a welcome surprise that instantly made us to stop :)

Along the way,we spotted a random Durga Ji Murti and a train passing through the fields.

In between I tried my hands for a few minutes of test drive in the mustard fields. And oh! how smooth the driving was.The reason I later realized how and why I was as refreshed as I left.No grumpy dismantled feeling to accompany me this time.Phew! #HappyDance #HondaWeekends#Punjab

Honda Mobilio : Don't Just Drive Flaunt It With Style

A car that’s built to tackle the toughest roads and look stylish while doing so. It has smooth driving dynamics to match its futuristic design. Mobilio fits in perfectly with Honda’s ‘Man Maximum, Machine Minimum’ Philosophy that believes in maximizing space for you and minimizing space taken by the machinery. This philosophy reflects in the car beautifully as we have designed concave indents on each door that offer more space. Similarly, all three rows of seats are plush with ample area to ensure a  comfortable ride.

A stylish 7 seater MPV that is as much for you, as it is for your family and friends. Honda Mobilio is as powerful as it looks. With an uncompromising 100 ps diesel and 119 ps petrol of pure power under the hood, Mobilio promises a thrilling drive each time you take it out for a spin.                        Supernote: A damn cool feature in my #MyAsusZenfone (Asus Zenfone 5 )

Gone are the days when cellphones were only cellphones with few selected features. With new upcoming Technology and Apps life has become simpler.I always struggled to draw on MSPaint on my laptop,my hands shake tremble and an otherwise decent drawing turns out to be childlike idiotic with me using eraser more than a pen to correct my mistakes.I wish if there was something simpler that made doodle easier.I wish instead of using the text feature of my phone,I would just touch the screen, write the way I write in my diary and its written.Well if you are looking for life to be simpler,Asus Zenfone is as cool as ice and as intuitive as you wish a technology to be.

In July 2014, ASUS India launched the ZenFone series which masters technology and design perfection. It has been awarded the “Budget Smart Phone of The Year – 2014” at Exhibit Tech Awards 2014.

Asus Zenfone 5 costs just Rs 9140(16 gb ram)

The ZenFone 5 is the perfect mobile companion for you, everyday. Some of its standout features include an 8MP PixelMaster camera, Corning Gorilla Glass, GloveTouch and the new ASUS ZenUI.The touch screen is so far one of the best I have used - its so fluid - that you can easily draw in the same way you draw with a pen on the paper.Signing your name becomes an easy task in Asus as does minimalistic drawings or even detailed ones if you have patience.

Follow Asus India on twitter here
                                                     and on facebook here

Prior to this with Android I have had left hope, this comes as a magic renewal of my faith in Android. So in the next 3 posts,I will be talking about what I liked and what I didn’t like about Asus Zenfone 5 coupled with doodles and pictures and videos.Let’s discuss how we got started, the battery life, some of the new features to look at,and what makes it so user-friendly and intuitive.

Doodle created by me in Supernote, and saved without grid!

It’s a smart and simple device that kind of understands you. Every time you use it you feel you are at the center of everything.Let me tell you how

1)Asus ZenFone 5:The Start

Very sleek and elegant and very user-friendly
The screen by default lands you to now,the temperature and date and place and weather to tomorrow what the weather is going to be like.It also highlights 3 features we use the most in form of circles : Camera,Phone and Text.As you swipe screen to unlock you would see ‘no sim attached and emergency calls only’ if you haven’t used a sim or ‘the sim’ if you have used one.Even if you haven’t inserted a sim,the phone works perfectly as desired. It isn’t as large as a tablet but in exactly the same size that will fit your palm.

For me,currently what It shows on my screen is Now Holika Dahan,5th mar Tomorrow Partly Sunny with T-Storms,Drive carefully.Bangalore 21 degrees.Dolyatra As you swipe in the home page, you would see Google search box with voice recognition and icons that includes email, play store, phone, internet, camera and asus. Now Asus icon contains primary apps which are most used.

2)Asus ZenFone 5:Supernote

My creative endeavor sometimes need simpler outlets. With Photoshop and paint and etc,I feel myself juggling with concepts or between the fact that either its too basic or time taking. But with super note,I felt its the perfect way to send a greeting.Like for example Holi. How many of you wished that in today’s date when the handmade cards are out,you would still create your own personalized doodle and mail someone near and dear. With supernote, along with acting as notes with text,it gives colors and pen and brush to fill up.You can save as removing grid and share on all social media channels and via mail. You can also add timestamps or add stamps which are basically cute clip arts. You can add music, take a picture, basically play around with Supernote. It’s so much fun!

3)Asus ZenFone 5:Calendar

The second feature which is primarily there in all phones but not to the simplest of simplest version Asus has.So Asus has in their calendar all holidays stored. So If you have chosen 'bharat'(India) while setup, while opening calendar for march you would see highlighted dates for holidays and festivals written along with.At the moment I can see Holika Dahan on 5th and Dolyatra on 6th.If you have stored your bday it’ll show your bday and all holidays in Agenda. You can also add events and guests who you want to invite in.

4)Asus ZenFone 5:Do It Later

So Do It Later are basically ‘To do tasks’you can categorize it as read later, call later, reply later, edit later or check later. While adding a new task, you can add task summary, add notes, due date, reminder date, and importance which you can choose from normal to high.So suppose if I want to shop, which for me is a task that I might skip in daily chores,I can always set a ‘to do task’ with a priority as normal. For important work such as planning a Holi party,I would set it as important to book tickets for it.You can also use feedback and help for the user forum asus users might have posted their FAQ’s on.And most of them have replies.

An interesting article shared by friends on social media, important daily news, an important e-mail sent from a colleague, and the text message from Mum - all the things you need to check and are afraid to forget about. Add these tasks into Do It Later, where all of your tasks will be clearly listed so you can quickly see what's on your to do list. You can also write your feedback or bug report.

5)Asus ZenFone 5:Contacts

When you set up the Zenfone,it asks if you have a google account. Now contacts gets all the contacts from gmail to begin with. What I liked about Asus Zenfone 5 was you can synchronize your new contact with either google account or another device. When filling up details of another device, you would be asked name, phone number and other details. So no need to save your contacts and write them in a sheet of paper. There are also user - friendly options such as delete multiple contacts, share multiple contacts, manage contacts, add multiple contacts to VIP.You can also choose to display only those contacts with phone numbers,or you can sort the contact by family name or given name.

VIP Contacts are key contacts to avoid missing important calls, messages and emails. You can create a group of contacts under tabs which are already there such as Friends,Co-workers,Family,Favorites,Frequent,VIP,emergency Contacts and Youtube.

You can also add your customized group. You can create a group of block list and white list.Block list would contains block calls and messages. All you have to do is just click + to choose the number to block.

 6)Asus ZenFone 5: Battery Life

This phone has excellent battery life,so even if you are using internet,it lasts for quite some time.Doesn’t get slow in performance when charging. It doesn't get heated for me,but NDTV lists occasional heating as one of the problems.

All in all,a pretty decent phone.Wait till the reviews of other feature in the phone comes in subsequent posts.Till Then,Admire my creativity and the elegance of the newly launched Asus ZenFone 5.

My name is Ronan and my last name is Ram.Ram,your holy god.

We were shocked,the songs playing on his music player in the car were old Hindi songs.He said "All the Indian movies show pyar and flowers and singing in the garden as everything is nice as life is beautiful as how it is supposed to be;like heaven;

And then there is always evil mother in law,or don to add spice to movies, here the movies made are mostly serious documentaries on situation in Israel, well most of them".He with pride added "the sister of my mom married a musician from India, and so in our home everything is from India."We don't have to go to Theater to watch Indian movies. In earlier days,Indian movies were very popular here.We no need to travel in India to know the country,we know everything from our home.He talked about Shammi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachan, Dharmendra and even discussed Bollywood stories that made us think that 'are we at the right place'.And Yes we were.

I wouldn't recall the last time my own definition of 'religious places are extremely conservative' was defeated, unless Israel happened. How we limit our thoughts are generally based on how media ,paper wrap it.

Tel Aviv in Israel known as one of the best party places in the world and Jerusalem we all know how significant it is when it comes to religion but there is so much more to it.It's a city which goes beneath and above, like layers of tunnels and its fascinating.Never in the moment you will feel duh-uh which I usually do feel if it is a religious place. But its the mystery which unfolds one after the other that keeps you on your toes.Israel has the dead sea and the red sea.The Haifas, the Akkos and the Masadas. Israel is stunning and not as told.

So beginning this x-mas pre and post,I am going to share with you the place were I felt deep connection with god.The place which let me free myself, and see the world in a whole new way. We'll discuss supernaturals, jazz, food, float, shopping, making bread, having wine blah blah and more..

At 1320 feet below sea level, dead sea is the lowest point on earth

Finding Jesus in Jerusalem;
We'll discuss more in next post;
Jerusalem is a fascinating place in itself

Getting lost was never this fun @ Masada

Night parties at Tel Aviv
This ones a silent party!
I even danced on the sands in the beach
can never forget that.

/*The trip was on invite by Israel Tourism but I loved it so much that extended it for 3 more days*/

Galileat - Culinary Adventures In The Galilee

She looked into my eyes.Said I was going through Pain.Flash.I was going through pain because in my past life,I would prefer to 'hide it here' but the fact was she was to the point. As if she just read my mind.As if she knew the sufferings I had gone through. As if she knew the reasons behind all attractions I have felt through. She didn't touch my hands or utter a single word of prayer or she didn't convince me of what she said. She just spoke.Speaking ahead, she said, gifted with the power of past life regression, she has healed many.It helps in overcoming fears, understanding life.At that moment,I was more amused than shocked. It was with the certain conviction that she said that made me smile. How could she know! This was unusual.I wasn't alone, she didn't hypnotize me,but she knew..

As I wrote on Facebook on June 23rd,2014:

----

Today was an eventful day.Met Nahida at Israel who is a wonderful cook, natural therapist and architect.Believes in judaism and re-incarnation.In fact,by looking at my face she told me something about my past life (oops but!).Had cured many cancers, many many diseases in Isreal, fears which are unknown, she believes in using this as a healer to people who come.Amazing! She says she's been gifted with this since Childhood and what an amazing cook...!

---

I overheard someone say that people born in Nazareth or some jews have these supernatural abilities since birth.

..And then was the time to cook the Israeli food..That was the most sumptuous home-made meal I had.Ever in Israel.

My Culinary Adventure In Cooking Workshop,Israel
At Julis, a Druze Village,Galileat

Stuffed vine leaves
Smelling the spices that went inside,I carefully rolled in the rice tight one after the other in the vine leaves that they eat all year along. The spice mix as a filling also called Baharat consists of Cloves,Cinnamon, little bit of nutmeg and cardamom.I was told to roll in tightly or else if I cook it,it will all open up.They use slow cooking techniques.Watch the video above to know the dishes of local Israelites.

After our little trial and error. We were all hungry and wanting to hit on food. The food was a full course meal which we initially were apprehensive if we'll have so much as part of a meal but the food was extremely delicious and we had it till our last bite.

There was Salad, dishes made of Zucchini,Chicken and Fish and this place is a must visit if in Israel. It serves and teaches to cook authentic homemade Jewish food which I fell in love with then and there. The patients who come here are taught, the schools are served.

Olives In Israel :And Everything You Wanted To Know
At Avtalyon, (a village in Central Galilee) for a typical Oil Press

Sitting at the lower Gallilee with the elevation anywhere between 400-650,we came to know about a place that is the most important place in Israel when it comes to Olive oil.90% of Olive Oil production was from this region. The reason being that these Olive oil trees were not watered by anyone but nature.

The rain gods did all the good work and hence the Olive oil produced in this region had very very high natural value.

The higher the altitude the Olive trees are grown , the better the Olives are. Most of the Olive oil they make in the region stays in the region. The main consumers are Arabs mainly, and it's not exported outside Lower Galilee, not even in Tel Aviv. The quality of Olive oil is such that people from all over Israel come and buy Olive oil from this place. They make around 80,000 bottles a year using the most hi-tech Olive press.

The Arabs control 100 % of the industry of the quality of Olive Oil,they harvest and in  every town they have 4-6 major olive presses in this region.

Each year, the most and the most expensive of Olive oil is determined after the harvest and the squeeze of Virgin Olive oils based on quality. The oil itself doesn't come from the seed but from the meat of the olive. The more oil you have the less meat you are going to have around the seed. The less the quantity the better the quality.

The variety of olive that grows here is sweet, because it comes from southern Lebanon. There are 4 things that changes the quality of the Olive Oil -Elevation,Soil,the Fact that they don't water at all,Everything is organic here and its very dry.Because its very dry in the area, you don't have the flies that harms the olives.

In Oct - Jan they harvest and they work 24 hours a day. There are two different types of Olive oils - One from Black olives and another one from Green olives. Oct-Nov is the right time for the Green olives as they are very very sharp, very spicy, very harsh with their tastes. Its considered to be the best olive oil.The color of the olive oil is green. The spicier it is the bitter it is.Its more healthy. The Black olives are from Nov-Dec.The Olive Oil from the Black Varieties are very very yellow. They have less vitamins and goes to fried cooking, less for dressing the salad.

Two main things in the olives that make it healthy - First of all is the environment second is the Acidity. But differentiating it in the market is hell of a task as many replicas are available. If somebody wants to buy good olive oil then its recommended to come in Oct - end of Dec because they are actually pressing the olives and they can see with their eyes what they are doing here, and buy it.

Interestingly,Everything tastes different when you bake with Olive oil like pastries, cakes and doughnuts.

So Is Olive Oil Really Healthy?

Olive oils are basically the antibiotics of the body.It works on two main systems - 'Heart and the Blood' and the Digestive system. The top leading research center on Olive oil are in Israel.

The green olives have chlorophyll. Olive.Olive oil thins the blood and goes directly to your digestive system.Acts like honey and gives energy.

It itself doesn't have fat.Bread makes you Fat not Olive Oil.This means it cleanses the digestive system. Also the Olive oil cosmetics are rich in anti-oxidants.

Instead of Creams that you use on baby rash for Diapers, you can put olive oil.

Guys don't forget to get back their cosmetics.Talking of cosmetics,we'll talk about it more when we discuss the precious dead sea...
