[All About Darjeeling]

Himalayan Zoological Park & Himalayan Mountaineering Institute: 7/10

Both the Zoo and the HMI are located at the same premises. An interesting feature about the zoo is that not many animals are caged.Their home is the downside open enclosure with the wall and we can see the animals when we stand at the upper edge.It was the first time that we saw red panda and the black panther(bageera) at the zoo.HMI is a museum for the climbers, and in honour of those who have climbed the mountains, the everest etc.Photography is strictly prohibited inside the HMI museum.

Video on Darjeeling

Tenzing Rock HMI: 8/10

If you are looking for a kind of rock climbing that's fun and not all strenuous, this cutie rock is for you :)..Many people including children enjoy the art of rock climbing here.It gets more easy when one of the instructor is standing just at the middle of the rock,to make it more easy for you, incase you think how to and where to go next.Same while coming down.

Tiger Hill : 9/10

Tiger Hill is one of the major attractions in Darjeeling where the glowing sunrays over the Mt Kunchenjunga charms you with its beauty. We reached early by around 4,and there were many others like us to witness the event.Though we missed the sunrise over the snow clad mountains, maybe it was due to the cloud the other night. An advice to those who travel:

Make sure you have two days in hand for tiger hill. And best is to go by a shared vehicle,as that would cost you less.

Ghum Batasia Loop And War Memorial:7/10

Batasia loop at ghum is where the toy train makes a turn of 360 degrees. The war memorial is situated at the loop premises. Many people go to the Batasia loop in the morning wee hours, while returning from Tiger Hill that's when the whole rail track is covered with track bajaar..In fact at that time ,you would not be able to figure out the track much.As the day passes by,the crowd disperses, and the place is neat and clean over a certain 10 am.That's when we have the toy train running on those tracks.

We get the best chicken and veg momos on the roadside of batasia loop, spicy tangy and delicious.

Shanti Stupa: 7/10

Shanti Stupa also popularly known as "Japanese peace pagoda" is a white pagoda carved with wooden work, and golden statues of budha, similar to the shanti stupa we have in Leh.

Darjeeling toy train: 9/10

How can we miss the experience of a chuk chuk gadi, how much I love the trains! The popular route people travel by is Darjeeling-Ghum,though we travelled till Kurseong.A very different feature about the toy train was that the seat was reversible and whenever the train changed directions,we were at our liberty to change our seat directions as well. The best view is when the toy train makes a 360 degree at ghum,so keep your eyes open when you hear "ghum, ghum, ghum".

Ghum Monastry:7/10

While coming back from Tiger Hill,we have the ghum monastry and the batasia loop. The Monastry is very small, and there were many small roadside dhele wale to sell goodies right in front of the Monastry gate.A 15 minute visit to the Monastry is prefered..

Rock Garden:6/10

A man made garden, made of rocks and artifical waterfall.Great for picnics.

Tibetan Refugee Centre:9/10

A scenic trek alongside the police station and ccd is the kacha road that leads to TRC and the gorkha statium and the horse race.Tibetan refugee centre is about the livelihood of tibetan refugees and all of them were busy in their small industrial workshops(Carpets, woolens, carpentry etc) they had there.TRC has a refugee museum, and the quote below is the one I clicked at TRC and it stands true 100%.

We have bigger houses but smaller families;
more conveniences, but less time.
We have more degrees, but less sense;
more knowledge, but less judgement;

more experts, but more problems;
more medicines, but less healthiness.
We’ve been all the way to the moon and back,
but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbour.

We build more computers
to hold more information,
to produce more copies then ever,
but have less communication.

We have become long on quantity,
but short on quality.
These are times of fast foods,
but slow digestion;

Tall men but short character;
Steep profits but shallow relationships.
It’s a time when there is much in the window,
but nothing in the room.

Gorkha Stadium & Horse Race Course:6/10

Both the stadium and Race course is visible while going down the trek.As the locals advised us otherwise, that the horse race doesnt have the horses and the stadium no longer is open,we skipped it altogether.

Ropeway:9/10

The ropeway was a great experience. The gandola is similar to the one at gulmarg. The panoramic views of tea gardens right at the path of the ropeway was beautiful. At the other end of the ropeway is a small village.A cute little girl dressed us as tea pickers,in a lovely red attire. We had maaja, some beer..and a great time at darjeeling.

That pretty much sums up Darjeeling.Hope you guys now have a fair idea of the place and the journey to Darjeeling now will be more easy and simple for you.

Take care guys, and drop in comments.

Cdr. Patil gets candid with Ankionthemove about all things nautical and the journey with Dive Goa so far......!!!

                             On The Shipwreck at Goa

Cdr. Arun Patil
Cdr. Arun Patil,  experienced Scuba Diver and Co-founder of Dive Goa has been a qualified scuba diver for the last 35 years and has first hand experience of a wide range of other water-sports such as sailing, windsurfing , river rafting, boat & jet ski handling, water-skiing  and kayaking. He is the founder Principal of the National Institute of Watersports and consultant in water-sports & safety to central and state tourism departments.

What inspires you to face the challenges every day?
_The fact that at Dive Goa, we are able to introduce so many to the fantastic underwater wealth that may  be slowly vanishing as the wild life in our jungles has over the years. The expression of elation and wonderment on the face of the first timers when they emerge on the surface after their dive is the best reward for the hard work of our Dive Instructors that goes into making their dive safe and enjoyable.

                      Ajey Blowing Bubbles

How safe are water sports in India?
As in the case of all adventure sports, you are safe if you follow the laid down safety guidelines. No bravado, no foolish risks. Choose carefully the dive training center that will lay the foundation of your future  dive excursions. Update and upgrade your scuba diving knowledge and keep in touch with your basic dive emergency skills. If you do this, you will be safer than while crossing the road in your metro .

The Journey of Dive Goa In Brief
Dive Goa started 5 years ago as a small dive center at Baina beach in Goa. It was basically a one man show of Ajey who has been passionate enough about scuba diving to chuck his merchant navy career and opt for setting up Dive Goa. I joined him 2 years later and we shifted the dive center to its present location in the O Pescador resort in Dona Paula area of Panjim, Goa. In the initial years, our clientele was mostly foreigners. But last year,  85% of our guests were young Indian professionals. We have also seen a trend where the entire family opts to do the certification course together.

                                    Diving in Netreni

Your greatest achievements so far?
Being considered among the best dive centers in India with emphasis on quality over quantity

Could you brief us about the Marine Awareness Program?
Our most popular program is the half day “ Discover Scuba Diving” in which we take a novice , even a non-swimmer, on a open sea dive after a brief training session in the swimming pool. We have modified this program for our young guests above age group of 12 years by adding a session with the instructor after the dive in which we help identifying the marine life the guests actually saw underwater and discuss what needs to be done to conserve the marine wealth. Slides and handbooks are used as training aids.

If there's one social cause you'd love to contribute to in India, what would that Be?
Proper disposal of the enormous amount of garbage , wet & dry as well as surface & underwater, that we create every day. Creating awareness at very early stage in children.

Your venture is an inspiration for many people who want to chase their dreams and do what they like even if it is out of their league. What would you like to say to them?
As the famous ad-line goes, “ Just do it......and remember there will be a lot of sweat & toil before it is achieved”

Anki S Thanks Cdr Patil for the candid chat.

"Just Do It" reminds me of a song from a bollywood movie Udaan, here's what it is:

Munnar
A One Day trip

Participants:
Gaurav Sinha:Writer
Ankita Sinha:Video Editing
Thanks To Karuna Sinha for guest appearance
Thanks To Pritish Shankar Ray for "Hariyali Ki"

How the day went by...

Woke up at 6:30 am. Started at 7:30.
  • First we went to top station. On our way back covered most of the important places like Echo point(which has got litte echo but the view is superb,by far the most visited tourist place), Kundala lake(not recommended), Mettupetty dam(its better than Kundala lake), Rose Garden(nice collection of flowers and plants) and bypassed some of them like 8th Mile boating point, photo point etc. We were fortunate enough to see the wild elephants taking mudbath on the banks of the Periyar river. Finally, had lunch in Munnar town at 2:15pm where we ordered the famous dish of Kerala, chicken masala and the fried fish.

  • Now we were confused for where to go as there were so many options. We picked Idduki dam over Eravikulam national park and Rajamalai national park. We were not very keen on going to national parks as on our way back from the top station, we had already encountered wild elephants and we were told by the locals that you wont be finding anything else.

  • Note : Going to Rajamalai national park in your own vehicle requires permits from forest officials. Also the queue there is said to be very long and we were advised, going there will eat up a lot of our precious time.
Spot Us:Me and Gaurav does a random rock climbing
  • All over the internet, its mentioned that Idduki dam is 40kms from Munnar. May be because of the wrong route taken by our driver, the milestones on the roadside started with 60kms! We discussed amongst ourselves and came to the conclusion that it is not worth going there which would have taken 5hrs going and coming back. We would have missed out on all the remaining spots in Munnar as well. Our decision was also influenced by the Senthal dam which was about 15kms from where we had started and thankfully came in the way of our not so great idea of going to Idduki dam in such a short span of time. To be honest, we had enough of dams.

  • Now we were feeling relaxed as we felt we have enough daytime to cover the remaining places near Munnar. First spices park(where the major attraction turned out to be elephants ride), then Pullivasal tea gardens, Pothamedu viewpoint(where the view is not so nice but the nearby rocks are great for amateur rock climbers like us) and finally to the Hydel park, a large park which has got loads of plants and ohhh well,a DAM!

  • Forgot to add,at Pothamedu viewpoint we were again in a dilemma! To watch the dance and martial arts show or to go to the hydel park. IMO, we made the wrong choice. Afterall, Kerala is famous for its rich culture. Anyway next we stopped at a temple which was nearby KSRTC bus stand, a must visit place if you are going with your elders who usually find the viewpoints, lakes, dams and parks pretty boring. Our next stop was for a thing that the ladies of all the age groups enjoy, a thing all the famous hillstations are known for and the only thing which is common between cities and hills, SHOPPING!

  • Kerala and Munnar in particular is famous for one more thing, spices. And we bought lots of them. I cant recall their names as my parents were buying them while I was buzy looking for chocolates. What I remember is that they bought green and leaf tea, dried black grapes, walnut(which is comparatively cheaper) and the best of the lot was the herbal hair moisturizer. My dad had a good laugh with the salesperson. We again got lucky as in the very next shop, the price turned out to be 50% higher. My sincere advice would be to go to as many shops as possible and buy accordingly.

  • It was almost 7 and we headed straight to the forest rest house which was located at about 10kms from Munnar. Everyone was very tired except me. As I switched on the TV, the score reads Nadal3 - Djokovic1. After an hour, the match between Spain and Italy went underway. Like the rest of the day, I was again spoilt for choices but my tiredness took over me and I dived to my bed much much before the completion of either of the clashes.Next morning, got to know Spain drew with Italy and later on Nadal won record 7th french open, and that was exactly what I wanted. I thought what a splendid day it was and headed straight to Kochi.
Summary
                    What did we learn?

  • If you are on a tight schedule, start early. I was rather surprised after reaching top station that we were among the first tourists getting there. Munnar sleeps till 9 in the morning and one can take advantage of that.

  • Plan properly. Personally, I dint like Kundala lake and Mettupetty dam(which are similar to Echo point) and Pothamedu viewpoint. Instead we should have gone to tea factory and cultural show as they offer something different. Also we wasted a lot of time in our failed attempt of going to Idduki dam. We should have done our research beforehand.

  • Pray it doesn't rain.
                  Have a nice trip.Thank You

Four Seasons Blogger Meet

A mail from the Four Seasons Blogging Community,an invite to join the community of like minded bloggers with an aim to raise awareness in India about wine, food and lifestyle was surely a new concept. This was my first time.

Guest: Mr. Abhay Kewadkar (UB- Head Four Seasons Wines and Chief Wine maker)
Date: 9th July 2012;7 pm onwards
Venue:Fava,UB City Bangalore

Caught up in the traffic for half an hour,I reached the venue half an hour late.A cheerful welcome smile from Akshay,"upstairs" was all he said, and I felt sorry for being late at Fava..Until I went upstairs and realised I wasn't so late after all.A couple of "hi" to the fellow bloggers made me little at ease with myself. So it was finally happening, the four seasons blogger meet.

Wine makes every meal an occasion, every table more elegant, every day more civilized.
~ Andre Simon, "Commonsense of Wine"

The evening started with white wine on each of our glasses,a cheerful introduction to Mr. Abhay. This wasn't as formal as I had expected it to be..This was a little chilled out!We exchanged candid conversations, laughed and smiled at our presence and finally all of us sat down.

Making good wine is a skill. Fine wine is an art.
~ Robert Mondavi, Harvests of Joy

The session was an interesting one.Mr Abhay entertained us with the light conversation on basics of wine pairing, along with his own real life experiences coupled with a few jokes. In India, its a common interpretation that wines go with almost every thing, and people generally do not go into the depth of which one goes with what.To them the aim is primarily to be in more talli like state which is attainable after a few glasses of wine, red or white. The main purpose of the Four Seasons Meet was to make wine more widespread, acceptable, reach out to the audience about its benefits and  of course enjoy the taste and the flavor.

The Irish believe that fairies are extremely fond of good wine. The proof of the assertion is that in the olden days royalty would leave a keg of wine out for them at night. Sure enough it was always GONE in the morning!-Irish Folklore

Frankly,I prefer white wine with cheese.Just cheese.A combination which is subtle and earthy.Four seasons meet brought a new flavour to my taste buds.We were served Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc in two glasses served with a Salad.Personally I liked Chenin Blanc more as I found to be more light and sweet in comparison with Sauvignon and they did quite match well.Though, to each his own.

                                                 Salad And Wines

The next was the yummy lamb gourmet. The best part about the event was to let us taste the wines with the various dishes and love the experience and come up with a choice of wines which we like.I personally liked Shiraz to Cabernet Sauvignon with the lamb.

Lamb being served while Nikita Smiles in the wine glass

In the end we were served Creme Brulee with the Blush wine..Oh I so love the color salmon pink.A deliciously fruity flavour of the wine was perfect with the dessert.

                                                The Salmon Pink Blush

Dessert-We Call It A Happy Ending

The conversation over wine and dine was splendid and fun.We Indians, are yet to accept wine as a healthy drink which could add onto an otherwise boring evening, though the trend is catching up.Hopefully in next couple of years we see more of us happy wining and dining. What a great way to celebrate.

All Thanks To Four Seasons and Their Wines!

My Beautiful Hair Story

The video(inset) is a true story of my Hair.

The video, text, poem, song and images herein are copyrighted works of ankionthemove. The images are actually being painted in the video.Reproduction in whole or part on the internet is prohibited.

When I was born as a baby gal,
Rosy Cheeks and no Hair
Then I grew up a little bit,
Accessorize,Clips Everywhere

One fine day,
On my 2nd Birthday
I looked like a fairy with long long hair..
Then came the day
When It was my first "Mundan"
I prayed and cried
Why did it happen so sudden

In anger
I cut my little doll's hair
The world didn't seem so fair
Then came my mom to the rescue
Oiled my hair and I danced doo-bi-doo-bi-doo

When I went school
Dressed neat and clean
My hair would shine
Like a glorious sheen
Being so naughty
I would often..
Play with my best friend's hair
Everything would just stick on to her hair

College was a beautiful beginning
I cut my hair, color my hair
Dip my hair and gel my hair
I dry my hair, spray my hair
On the long bike rides into the air..

One day
I grew up and realised
How disaster is my hair
I started oiling
And then I thought of perming
The bad lady into the parlour
Just burned my hair with the chemicals
Then my hair started
Falling and Falling and Falling

On my wedding day
I went to the salon
On my first wash
It felt "oh so smooth"
I asked the lady
She said "Use Dove"
"We all love Dove,we all love dove"

And then I had to
Move on from Delhi->Bangalore
The weather was cool and the water plenty
I bathe and bathe
Till my buckets were empty

And then..
The hard water reacted
Oh no! Not again
My hair started falling again

And Then
The little things from the past
Came to my mind
Oiling,Dove,Vegies and Water
Fruits,Shampoo and Conditioner
Blink Blink..
...And that was the end of my hair problems
-Anki S.

Mundan: In Indian tradition, the hair from birth is associated with undesirable traits from past lives. Thus at the time of the mundan, the child is freshly shaven to signify freedom from the past and moving into the future. The rite is performed as a special ceremony in most homes, for young girls and boys.

My hair,deserves a little love,
My mother's weekly head message
The soft warmth of her hands
On my locks.

My hair,deserves a little venture,
A splashing swim pool dip.
My hair no longer fear,
A bike ride,or a long trip.

My hair,Deserves a little change,
A hair cut,a spa,a tong,a perm.

Sometimes curly,sometimes straight,
Sometimes wild,sometimes mild,
Sometimes long,sometimes short,
Sometimes pixie,sometimes coloured.

Cascading into spirals and loops,
Days of wow and days of oops
My hair,Deserves a little care,
A Dove shampoo conditioner pair.
Because what stays
beautiful is beautiful.
-Anki S.

Having lustrous and healthy hair is the dream of every women.Having thick hair is the dream of every men. In Indian mythology a woman's hair had such importance that they symbolise their honour and pride,Draupadi's hair was of great significance to Mahabharata...after being insulted and dragged into the court by her hair, Draupadi vowed that she won't tie up her hair and would let it remain dishevelled till bhima ties it up with his hands filled with duhshasana's blood! And today Draupadi Hairstyle is back in fashion again : Leaving hair loose, cascading down one's back.Quite an irony!

The main character of the Walt Disney animated flick "Tangled" and the upcoming release "Brave" symbolises the beauty of a free flowing hair. While tangled is long cascading endless tresses, brave is all about wild curls.

And for all the Hollywood divas out there, how much we love Katrina Kaif's poker straight thick hair,Kangana Ranaut's deadly curls and Priyanka Chopra's hairstyle. We love Victoria Beckam and Rihana for the pixie. We also loved Lisa Ray bold and bald.

WE WISH..

And every time we envy and compare,we secretly wish for longer fuller and smooth hair. And the reasons are many:
         -For healthy hair looks neat.
-Different hair styles make you look different, simple and easy.
-And with every hair that grows, a compliment follows..
-An ugly face cannot be replaced,an ugly hair can be nourished.

Jokes apart, men or women, both desire to have thick shiny black hair.Who would love a John Abraham or Akshay kumar or Shahrukh khan bald?A mow ark can't be sported on a unruly rough hair or even a Dhoni cut!

If I ask any of my fellow indibloggers,a very prompt answer would be "Hair Care=Oil Message" ,most of us in India abide by a weekly almost like a ritual oiling their hair with coconut oil.Shampoo and conditioning comes next. While very few condition their hair, the number is growing with increasing number of women with premature grey hair, hair fall and hair damage. In case of men,its the early balding that's the major concern.

"At times I have unruly hair, but I still love my hair".In last 4-5 years,I have tried pixie, boy cut, streaks, long hair, curly hair, straight hair, coloured hair, layered cut, steps cut, sadhna cut,bob cut, fringes and I am happy.Every cut makes a change to my face. It's the only thing I can experiment with as long as it is there..

To make a change to your hairstyle with less hair damage, and to revive the texture of hair again,my hair mantra is:
-Do not fear the outcome of an hair experiment. The more comfortable you are with you are with your hair the more lovely you look.
-If a chemical treatment has severely damaged your hair,do not panic.Instead apply dove repair shampoo and conditioner with mask and apply curd as a homemade hair treatment.
-Do not go for a color and perm treatment together at the same time.Take a gap of 15 days -1 month between each treatment.
-Regular hair steam with oil and after message, helps in oil absorption and growth of hair.
-To revive back the grey hair, cut the grey hair if you have few and apply mehndi with coffee every month..along with amla oil.
-Color your hair with ammonia free colors readily available in market these days.
-Visit hair spa,but do not expect miracles in a single setting.

Ever since I have started taking care of my hair, there's no turning back, from pixie to long tresses my hair just smiles....

We all have shared our stories,a little birdie called "DOVE" wants to share her story too:

I love being a white angel,
Blue skies are my home.
"DOVE" is what they call me
A second name for "LOVE"

Jawaharlal Nehru called me
A peace pigeon,
I stand for humanity
My wings have the power to end
The world of disparity

To live my dream
I transformed into a white soft cream
Into the bottle that's now called DOVE
Me and my bottle are now a team.

We started our journey
Into the wild
In the midway,a lady cried.
Her hair was all that dry

"Please give me a drop
Oh little birdie.."

A few drop of DOVE
Transformed the lady's hair
Into a crown of glory
Happily she said
"Can I come along?

Me,Dove and the Lady,
Started walking hand in hand
Until we saw the fight
A war in the unknown land

"Please give us peace
Oh little birdie.."

A few drops of DOVE,
Transformed the battle field
Into a harmony of festivals
Happily they said
"Can we come along?"

Me,Dove,The lady and the soldiers
Started walking hand in hand
Suddenly we found the roads in mess
As if for years had been cared less

"Please give us smoothness
Oh little birdie..."

A few drops of DOVE
Transformed the road into
A sheer shiny black smooth path
Happily they said " Can we come along"

Alongside the road, a little young gal
Was crying with her eyes closed.
She envied the ones who were beautiful
And wondered why she was cursed

"Please give me a chance
Oh little birdie..."

A few words from DOVE
Transformed the gal from
The roadside gal to the DOVE poster gal

Now that's called LOVE
The birdie DOVE said
We love you,we love all gals,
We love peace,we love your hair
And that's why we care..

The little gal smiled and so did all the others :)

Thanks Dove For The Gift Hamper..Absolutely love it.

The MIG Love Chase

$

"Dad,isn't this plane wonderful",I sneaked peak in with my eyes wide open into the small hole, the kind of which forms with the space between the two doors of a hangar.

"That's a restricted area, stay away" said my Dad.

Why are areas which are restricted always so tempting. But the fact is,it is.I was small, small enough that my dad carried me into his shoulder while I still had my eyes on the hangar. There were more planes, but the officer was more interested in explaining operations and radar and stuffs which may  require some high end intelligence or may be I was just small enough to grasp it.There were planes, but that was a beauty....

Ever since that day, planes were my fancy. Not the ones which are AIR INDIA,OR AIR ASIA but the sleek military ones.I admire the big ones too,but the speed and the design and everything else combined is a combination which is superb. And till date I never heard anyone say "I hate MIG's".It's tough world out there, very tough out there, but at one age,you really do not care. It's kind of fancy you have in your eyes,be it everything.Be it Engineering,be it being a Doctor,be it being in Army,be it whatever,we have usually a very vague idea of how things goes inside.

Admittedly,I have a crush on planes and I seem to never get over it even when I grew up.Even now,I love them for reasons I do not know.Though my dream was shattered when My brother mocked me "You are short of height" way back in 2001.Engineering was a very obvious choice.

I still do not know why I chose engineering at that time which I did because most others did and also because I wasn't aware of any other option.I didn't know what I was supposed to do when I will be out of my college. For those who choose to be Doctors,it's not only about treating patients, you have to be updated about what recent medicines have come in and every time. For Defence personal aspirants, its not only about having the benefits of govt service, there is a lot of hard work too. It's sad that many a times this vague idea leads us to a wrong career choice, which is slowly improving with many people taking more risks in terms of career.

One thing lead to another and I landed up being a Software Engineer.I loved it for my salary but at the same time hated it for the boring work I used to do.It had its pros and cons, like every other job.I moved to Bangalore in search of my peace of mind, and decided to just appear for an Airforce exam, without knowing what the paper would be on.I didn't even know if I would qualify for the age factor, because I wasn't too young to fly.Well the age you can appear in the exam is 23 for flying. So I did some research and found that Technical branches in Airforce has the last qualifying age as 28.But that was technical, I was a techie and I end up being a techie didn't sound too promising but worth a try.Because at least you get to see planes.Another reason was "Army takes till 25 and navy in the same ranges",so I had no other option at one point of time. And Airforce as a matter of fact, does take married women as intake,so that was an added bonus.

I still remember,I went to Yehelanka Airbase, and I had no clue what I was going to do.As in unfortunately it was a last moment decision and I didn't get time to screen papers or even have a feel of it.I went inside the campus,as rest of us.We were sitting on a desk, and the exam time was rescheduled.I could clearly see many of the people revising notes or going through books, and grasp everything they could at the last moment. There was this guy,who came up to and said "Airforce?" and I hate the conversation which is "Me Aiforce,You Airforce" ,I said "Yes,because I think that's an Airforce exam we have here".

Well, the conversation didn't turn out to be as snoopy as I thought it would be,and he seemed a pretty decent guy.We talked about his preparation ,obviously not mine, because I wasn't prepared. He was confident enough that he would clear because he somewhat seemed focused on Airforce. And I think he did because the answers were correct, but I was never in touch with him really. Now how do you react to questions in examination which you might have had heard in class XI,probably on Physics or Chemistry. You would hate it if you are out of touch for like 7-8 years, and you would know that there is certainly an answer, because its an objective question paper but you would never know which one.And I had this confusing "Such an easy paper, and I don't know the answer" expression for most of the questions.I don't remember what I did, probably ticked all B's then C's then A's then D's whichever was visually good looking option to me.

I came out,and this guy said "Such an easy paper","Yeah it was".No doubt.I would've scored 100% if I was just out of school or maybe even out of college.I thought of saying "Dude, great for you" but then I did say "Yeah it was".Now some people start discussing answers and that's weird. He started discussing answers in the crowded Airforce Bus.He realised soon enough that I wasn't either interested or my exam didn't go well.So he gave me some gyan on don't worry and stuff and all of a sudden "Why don't you try movies, start with south Indian movies..blah blah?".Sometimes the conversation are so funny, that you really can't stop laughing.

But sometimes its essential too.I can't deny the fact that the conversation was a relief from the Airforce paper, and obviously the bus ride.Yelahanka in some ways is not transport friendly. The Airforce bus left us at the gate, and we were supposed to take a public transport which wasn't available at that time. And luckily this guy realised that I was new to Bangalore,he said why don't we go by a bus and you can get down and take another which might connect to your place. And in a way I thought that was sweet. We didn't exchange numbers,we didn't talk or we didn't mail or nothing of that sort. But sometimes you meet people who are just there for you,at the right moment,at the right place,at the right time.Perfect!

So you think I lost..

But the game begins.I flew a microlight next year with a Captain as a co pilot on a TIF flight, and took plane all the way back.I appeared for Airforce exam again and this time I went to SSB Mysore, stayed for 6 days, had fun with the gals. And that was my best decision ever.I didn't get selected, but I do not regret it.It changed me in ways I cannot express.Read my next story on the change and the whole SSB gala, till then stay tuned.

Tiger Tourism Ban

"India's Supreme Court bans tourism in "core zones" of more than 40 government-run tiger reserves.".The number of tigers in India currently is 1,700.Just 1,700.

THE BELOW STORY IS A DIALOG EXCHANGE BETWEEN A MA(MOTHER) AND HIS SON 10 YEARS FROM NOW

"Ma,ma How Does A Tiger Look Like".Asked a 10 year old kid.

"Well..A tiger is a ferocious animal".Said a confused ma,a little threatened by the next question which she quietly presumed would be on.

"Where In India, can I see it?".

"Its extinct."

"But I wanna see it maa, please please"

"I see it in cartoons,I see it in friends albums from Thailand"

"Where Did They Go?"

"They..well they went to boarding school because they didnt complete their homework, now go and complete yours"

"You are lying,if they didn't like India they would have gone somewhere"

"They are all dead"

"Oh..sad who killed them?"

"We did"

"And why?"

"Because we..eh we loved to click our pics with the animals,we loved to peek into their every activity,we messed up their habitat"

"Can't we import them from somewhere"

"We can,but how many..it would take years to get back to the track"

"How many were there when you were young?"

"1700"

"You could've adopted a baby tiger for me"

"You know son,its not easy, these things"

10 Years back,I read the paper "SC Bans tiger tourism"
The other day 100 others shout that its irresponsible to take an action such as this"
The ban was lifted"

"But Why so?"

"Because some people had their business in the tiger periphery"
And whatever anyone says they are humans too

As we are,we were in the mind of conflict
SC Bans tiger tourism,is wrong
Because we wanted to go on jungle safaris
To prove the world how adventurous we are
Little did we know
That when there would be no tigers
There would be no safaris
"Ma,what about other animals?"
"In this world who cares?"
"We all are Animals aren't we?"

"Why do you say so"

Look
The Gal got raped,we saw as if nothing happened
The Guy was bleeding after the accident, noone helped
The Stray dogs were killed,we were happy
The Tigers came and went,we still do not care
All we care is about how irresposible the gal was,
How sad the accident happend,
How cruel are the animals as they bite us,
How wonderful are the tiger safaris
We all are mute spectators
We blame our people
We justify our culture
But when It comes to helping the society
We run away like a dog
And we say the animals are animals.

Have you ever felt like you need to DO something different in life?? Something that gives you immense satisfaction of achievement. That desperate urge to break the chain of mediocrity??Well, I was exactly in that stage of my life when I came to know about the skydiving session to be held in Pondicherry. It felt like the Gods were calling upon me to to go out there and achieve my dreams.

With the help of this blog 'Anki on the move' , I was able to get the full details of the Skydiving Camp and company conducting it , 'Kakini Enterprises'.I finally set out to Pondy , for the biggest adventure of my life ever!!

I had opted for the 'Static Jump' because I wanted to have the experience of jumping and maneuvering the parachute on my own. It was a three day camp, the first two days I was given training on the know- hows of skydiving, parachute training etc. My instructor was very patient and always emphasized on the importance of safety, so much so that, even if woken up from the middle of my sleep, I would be able to tell how to react during an emergency situation!!

It was really interesting and I enjoyed the training a lot. At the end of it all,I was asked to write an exam of 60 questions, to test my understanding of the whole process. (And I managed to pass it, phew!!!) By this time, I had gained a lot of confidence, that YES, I could do it!

Then came the third day of the camp, finally it was my turn to jump!! I was very nervous and even more excited. As I got into the small cessna 4 seater aircraft,I was greeted by the pilot and asked to keep my hands and feet inside the plane at all times. As the plane slowly took off, I gripped the handle of the seat tightly and made a silent prayer to God. By the time we reached the required altitude, I was quivering with anticipation and excitement. When I got the thumbs up sign, I mustered all the courage I had and jumped out of the plane.. I was airborne!!! It was one of the most exhilarating moments of my life. After a few hundred feet of free fall, my parachute opened, and wallah , I was skydiving! I couldnt belive my eyes, I was actually doing it! I could see the whole city of Pondicherry and the Bay of Bengal under me! I started navigating the parachute and slowly inched closer to the ground.

The challenge was now to land safely, the hardest part..As I got closer to the ground , I started following the instructions given by the ground instructor. I managed to land in the vicinity of the drop zone, safely ,without any casualties!! I couldn't believe I did it!!!!  I am so proud of myself of having actually achieved one of my long term dreams.

So for all those out there with an adventurous streak and an inkling for skydiving, all that I can say is , GO FOR IT!!! In Skydiving, the ground is the limit!

For All Those Folks, who still think skydiving is a myth in India, have a look at the article published in Hindu Recently:

Happy Independence Day!For A Better India Tommorow :)

Amidst the news of Kidnapping,Murder,Corruption and Dirt,is hidden plethora of positive developments in India,we ignore.

As Abdul Kalam once rightly said

KALAM: Why is the Indian media so negative?
16 November 2006
By A.P.J. ABDUL KALAM

Why is the media in India so negative?

Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements? We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why?

We are the first in milk production.

We are number one in Remote sensing satellites.

We are the second largest producer of wheat.

We are the second largest producer of rice.

Look at Dr. H Sudarshan, he has transferred a tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters.

I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news.

In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime. Why are we so NEGATIVE…?

An Idea Called Bhutan

We'd love to,but we can't travel everywhere.Or we manage to,just to wander around.

Sitting in front of computer along with my brother and making plan for an international journey or an adventurous indian one,yet cheap was on our list.We noted down a few places we had in our mind:

1)Andamans/Lakshwadeep by ship
2)Thailand by Air Asia
3)Malaysia by Air Asia
4)Nepal by road

We were puzzled.Puzzled to the extent that we googled every possible keyword on cheap + travel option.Andamans by ship was exciting and new, though it was all rains and droptlets at Andamans. The best season is Jan-Mar.The last thing we wanted was to get ourselves drenched or flooded in Indian ship bunkers.Besides I had already been to Andamans once.Thailand was equally promising, though I had already availed the Bangkok + Pattaya option before.Malaysia by Air Asia, not bad.But travel in Malaysia is expensive ,at least Langkawi is,which I was more interested in.Nepal,is on my to do list.

On Why Bhutan?

The call of the mountain did not wait any longer when I told my brother "Bhutan, its so near to India, must be cheap!"

Google "Bhutan" and you find the packages that were expensive to our standards, well not as expensive as Maldives,Europe or US but not as cheap as Thailand.Truth is,if you are out to experience International and if you are comfortable by road, there is no better alternative than Bhutan for Indians. In some ways it's similar to Ladakh and Sikkim, but different as its more developed and clean. It's even cheaper than Thailand in some ways,no airfare cost, the travel by public transport is cheap, the currency equivalent,no language problem, and it's squeaky clean and well maintained.

Downside is :

1)Shopping is unbearably expensive(clothes,jewellery,artifacts)
2)Roaming charges are very high.We chose to use a local sim for our calls
3)There isn't much information on Internet.

Advantage is

1)In case, you are sick or ill during your travel, you can contact the Indian Army Representatives at Thimpu. There is a general hospital run in the army premises, the staff is very helpful ,the doctors excellent and they treat the Bhutanese locals as well as Indians.
2)The trek to Tiger's Nest is worth the 2.5 hours uphill and once in a lifetime experience.
3)You get to see a strange animal called Takin, which is also a national animal of Bhutan.

Let me take you through different aspects of Bhutan through my video and the write up in the next post.Till then stay happy,we are entering into one of the world's happiest country soon :)

Cupid's Pick:Love or Arranged

Remember the cute flutter of hearts, the day when DDLJ songs seems like a perfect staple, the day when you have had ever eye on someone? It's called the age of teens, the age when your mom advices you sheepishly on things you would know but wouldn't want to hear, pretending to be one of the most ignorant teens ever. The feeling is uncontrollable, the desire unexplainable. To spice it all a couple of your friends jokingly and mockingly says "combine the line of your hands, and aha you have the complete half moon" and then you have the whole gang of gals behind how many kids you gonna have, how many relationships you gonna have all written on your palms. We believe, yet we know its for fun. Then we take out our notebooks, write on the last page in big letters FLAME ,we all have done, well most of us have, writing names of our friends, counting the alphabets and tick tock coming up the FLAME answer as FLAM(Anything which fits in first four alphabets sums out to be LOVE).But for reasons true to teens, not all turn out to be fairy tales, some beautiful friendships some a lesson.

It's insane.I am a die hard romantic, and back then I truly believed if I ever have a marriage It has to be a love marriage,or no marriage,so much so that my parents always re-confirmed if I even had a crush, was I in for a marriage? The next 4 years of college life was beautiful,I had the best times with my boyfriend and though we were truly into each other,we never thought of marriage. It was either too early ,or we weren't too compatible. Also, marriage is a responsibility we weren't prepared for.We pledged whatever happens between us "we'll remain best of friends",and "never never marry each other".

We broke up after 4 years of dating for reasons unexplained. We thought our parents are too serious about us,and its time to not joke.I registered my profile in shadi.com,and even though a grip of sadness was still in me,I recovered and heard about all the prospective grooms my parents did present to me.And happily, the prospects were interesting, though I had my mind set on love marriage.

We are born and spoon fed with romantic movies.I was determined to get my boyfriend back, inspite of the prevailing difference in communities and region,we did manage to convince our parents and we got married. It's been a mix of sad and happy moments, but over those 3 years I have learned a lot to cope up and enjoy the life and take it as it comes. It's been an interesting transition.People say every marriage requires a certain amount of adjustment, but for us,we are still going strong, and are still the friends we used to be.The difference is,I no longer watch TV,he does.I sometimes cook, sometimes he makes breakfast for me.Sometimes he loves me,sometimes we fight. But don't all friends do the same?I love to be in the love marriage.Though I would have also never said "no" to an arranged one.My perspective on marriages changed drastically over our breakup, and you'd ask me why?

"The breakup gave me an ample time to analyse.Dad loves Mom.Nana loves Nani. And its not love marriage. It's arranged, then where did the love come from?I love when my mom with due to respect to dad calls him,and says "aap mat karo ye,I'll do it","I also love it when mom and dad pose together, they look so picture perfect".I love when Nani respects Nana and I also love it when they were still by their side in their old age."

Love happens.Marriage makes it beautiful, love or arranged.

I no longer, envy my friends who have had better marriages than me.I am also looking forward to my friend's marriages, that are arranged. We know,it works, sometimes even better, sometimes not so much.

A little what I have learnt on marriages

-Be yourself.Adjust when need be,but do not push too hard, you'd miss yourself when you lose the real you.

-Make some decision mutual, some independent choices. But give space too.

-In arranged marriages, ask your parents to not hurry up.Take a gap of a year after your engagement, know the person, fall in love, understand you are compatible and then marry.

Example :Recently I have seen many of my friend's and relative's parents do the above and it did the trick.

-In love marriage, understand that the person is bound to change a bit.

-In love marriage, its best to know your in laws before marriage and live with them.Only then you can understand the differences or relate to them.

-In today's age,it's important to be not be totally dependent on each other, that ways, you shine as a more confident person who can support your mate in tough times.

-It's also important to mutually agree upon your choice of work, babies, and other decisions before marriage.

-If a marriage turns out to  be depressing and not all promising,Step out.Even if it's an arranged or love. After all, you wouldn't want yourself to be in your worst state for the rest of your life.

On Why The Success Rate Of Arranged Marriage Is More?

Reasons are many.We all know it.The grooms are screened and over screened,we get the best of the lot as our selection and we choose. It's our parents best effort. They know us,and they know the best for us.Most of the times as the arranged marriages are from the same community, the lifestyle before marriage and after marriage is identical and hence,we do have to adjust less. But that's not true in every marriage.

In love marriage,we are ruled by our hearts. We seldom enquiry the person's background, community, religion. For us, it doesn't matter. But the truth is,it does.

The silent marital cupid that hurts:LOVE or ARRANGED marriage?

In India,it's common to sometimes adjust for the sake of it.An alcoholic husband, beating a wife. The wife doesn't complain. The husband doesn't love the wife anymore, but the wife is there for the kids. The husband pays no attention, but the wife is there because her parents have arranged the marriage. In such cases please do not overdo the word "ADJUST".Try to make it work, but understand that marriage is for your sake, and not your parents or your kids.Don't take marriage for granted. It could work well as a shadi ka meetha ladoo or a silent marital cupid that kills.

The Almost Perfect Background For Marriage

I say it's almost perfect, because it is my own experience, observation and lessons learnt over the years.

1)If you have a background of your dad being in a transferable job,and you have been pampered to the core, the best and the most suitable match is marry the one who is in a transferable job or someone who has similar background than yours. That ways even if you both are from different communities, the background helps you to connect comfortably.

I have seen many of my friends do it,and they have had the best marriage till date. Touch wood.

2)If you are in love and your backgrounds don't match, like in my case,my dad is in transferable job and my hubby's parents as joint family, there are bound to be differences.Accept it,but also allow each other to grow.

3)If you and your hubby both has a background of joint family, that works well too.

4)If you are introvert and your husband extrovert or vice versa. It's best to respect each other for the differences.

5)If you and your hubby are from different religions, respect each others religion as well. The tendency is to change, change out of your will, not by force. If you think that you need not change anything, stick by it.It'll take time, but your spouse will understand.

6)Never try to burst the bubble of the male ego,but at the same time be mutually agreeable.

As one of my friends said, marriages work depending on individuals mindset and their needs, and the fact is true 100%.

Choice is yours! And make it wise. After All It's a once in a lifetime event.

Arranged or Love doesn't matter. What matters is how you make the most of it.

Bhutan On Your Own Part 1

In the wanderlust for the unusual places of serenity, the history unfolds and we land at one of the most happiest countries in the world,Bhutan. How lovely was it to discover the land so near, yet so unspoken about. The Land of Thunder Dragon as they call it,was where we had planned our good times for the next 5 days and we had an incredible journey.

Video on Bhutan, please keep the volumes high :)

Why Bhutan?

-Bhutan because, its so near to India.
-Bhutan because,we were travelling to Darjeeling and Bhutan was too near to skip.
-Bhutan because,we love the mountains.

Reaching Bhutan

There are two ways to reach Bhutan

- Paro Airport By Air(The journey is beautiful as it passes through 4 of the 5 world's most beautiful passes and snow clad mountains).Officially known as Druk Air,the travel by air is expensive for the budget friendly folks. However, for nationals except Bangalesh and India,Druk Air is the only option.

- For Bangladeshi and Indian Nationals, best is to try the Hasimara-Phuentsholing-Thimpu route by road.Reach Phuentsholing from New Alipur Duar or Hasimara Railway Station. The nearest Indian counterpart to Bhutan is Jaigaon and the Bhutan counterpart is Phuentsholing. From Hasimara railway station,it takes half an hour and Rs 300-350 to reach Phuentsholing. From New Alipur Duar it takes 1.5 hours. We chose to hire a taxi from New Alipur Duar as we have had a lot of luggage and the stoppage at Hasimara was for a fraction of minute. Also, the timing of the stoppage at Hasimara was a bit odd.

The Easy Process Called Permits

Phuentsholing in Bhutan is the entry point to Bhutan.Phuentsholing is also where you get your permits done.

The Bhutanese officials are friendly(not only in Phuentsholing, but also in other parts of Bhutan) and all you have got to do is pose in front of web cam for identification check, submit your passport and fill up a one page form. It's also advisable to carry a few passport size photographs. It takes 1-1.5 hours to get the permits processed for journey forward. We took rest in the nearby hotel Druk for lunch.

Also, you get permits for Thimpu and Paro from Phuentsholing. From Thimpu to Punakha, you do need to apply for permits again at Thimpu which also gets processed in an hour's time.

There are several checkpoints in between travel from Phuentsholing to Thimpu(2-3),Thimpu to Punakha(1) and back.

Did you know?

What's so common for the word "Druk" and what does it mean?We have Druk Air,Druk Hotel and Druk Pickles in Bhutan. The Druk (Dzongkha is the "Thunder Dragon" of Bhutanese mythology and a Bhutanese national symbol. A druk appears on the Bhutanese Flag, holding jewels to represent wealth),hence the popularity of the word.

Things to keep in mind

1)Bhutan is fairly remote,it's best to withdraw money from the nearest ATM at Jaigaon, than risk finding a one at Bhutan. It's also safe to keep 8-9k for a trip of 5-6 days.

2)The roaming charges are dam expensive, best is arrange a local sim either through a hotel or a taxi cab. They would require you to hand over a copy of permit, and pay Rs 65 and you get the sim. The talk time is 50 Rs and is valid for a month. The local call charge is Rs 1,Bhutan-India Rs 5.

3)Although travelers are free to wear what they choose to,almost all monasteries in Bhutan follow a strict dress code of full covered arms and legs. Also, even in spring, the passes could be very very cold and chill to the spine.Best is to carry an all round jacket, with a shawl to cover up(in case you are wearing sleeveless in town) and no shorts or Bermudas in the temple premises.

4)Shopping at Jaigaon is cheaper,So if its a artifact or a jewellery you would love to buy,but couldn't afford in Bhutan, this place is the best bet.Though you wouldn't find many shops, and its best to ask your taxi driver to drop you at the souvenir shop.

5)In case you fall ill,the general hospital in Thimpu run by the Indian Army could be your immediate help.

Ways of Transport in Thimpu,Bhutan

Phuentsholing to Thimpu(Capital of Bhutan) takes 7-8 hours by bus/car/taxi.

1)From Phuentsholing,it generally takes Rs 60 to the interstate bus stand. The bus stand is fairly large with several ticket counters. As there are very few buses that takes you to Thimpu, you have to try your luck at the various ticket counters. It takes around Rs 200 from Phuentsholing to Thimpu by Mini Bus.

2)In case, all the buses are running full, they sometimes do,best is take a cab to the taxi stand which costs around Rs 50 from the bus stand, and get into a shared taxi which would cost you Rs 500.

3)As we were 4 travelers,we chose to hire a car exclusively for us.A small car costs around 2k and the big one 4k.

Currency in Bhutan

The Bhutanese currency is Ngultrum(BTN) or locally known as "Nu"

1 Rupee = 1 Nu

Phuentsholing. Also, sometimes Rs 500 is not acceptable, its best to carry as many Rs 100 notes as possible.

Bhutan Time is 1.5 hours ahead of Indian Time.

Bhutan Dress Code

Bhutanese are smart and well dressed. The girls usually wear Kira(skirt) and Taego(Jacket). The guys wear Gho.One of your best souvenir could be the Kira which costs around 1000 Rs(Minimum) and 300Rs(Taego),the very affordable ones ,we can get at Thimpu main market.

The Kira is long dress usually made from finely woven fabrics with beautiful coloured patterns and designs. A wonju (blouse) is worn under the Kira and the Kira is held in place over the shoulder with a koma (silver buckle). Usually are made from fine silk cloth. Over the dress a taego (open jacket) is worn. The men wear the gho, although a long flowing robe but which is worn at knee length, tied in place at the waist with a small hand-woven kera (belt).

I know, you all must be so eager to know more on Bhutan, and yes during the course of the time,I would be taking you through. Tomorrow we soak in the wind of air,as we travel through the roads of Bhutan, ,but for now,it's the time to leave.

To All Those Who Have Missed My Last Post On Kurumba Village Resort Trailer
Kurumba Village Trailor

The Kurumba Village Resort Conoor, undoubtedly, contains an ambiance with plenty of poetic possibilities. You experience a mix of feeling inside ranging from happiness to being excited and when I say you so,I meant my own meandering experience.Let's say

A cottage room with a bed woven with subtle lighting and TV room with beer in the evening, jacuzzi to relax with the views of valley and a balcony to just look around the lush green valley of the forest.Wow isn't it?

So you've missed the trailer,no worries, the below video takes you through each room and also the cooking crew of Kurumba.

To top it up,we have a chai and pakoda stand, very near to swimming pool and the food is made with the fresh spices from the spice plantation of the resort. If you have kids, there's a separate section for kids to play,if you yourself want to indulge in indoor activities, there's a sports recreational room too.You can trek as well in the forest with the guide.

One of the newest retreat in Conoor is Tea Nest, run by the Kurumba Village Resort. We stayed at tea nest for half a day,and we found it to be adorable. It's a colonial bungalow in the middle of plantation. So when you get up in the morning, you can take a morning stroll in the tea garden. The cuisine served is awesome,we loved everything from starters to desert and they are all infused with tea.The rooms in tea nest have the names as tea names "silver tips, jasmine, green, lemon etc".The staff is very friendly too..We also tasted varieties of tea at tranquility, and the information on how tea is made was very new to us.We thought its just the grind and the tea dust we see in the market, but the process can itself be written on another blog post, its so technical and lengthy. But then we tasted the best teas,so no complaints ;)

So with the pleasant memories of Kurumba and Tea Nest,we leave ooty! And yes,Ooty and no chocolates impossible. We got home made chocolates, and lots of them.I really like the original ooty chocolates,we get so many home made chocolates these days and everywhere, but the chocolates from ooty are class apart.Wish any of the blogger share their homemade chocolate recipes here,so we give the guys from ooty some real competition.

Thanks to Kurumba and Tea nest for lots of memories to bring back.

Bloggers and The Good Wine

Free the grapes! There's always time for more wine for all of us as the freedom of grapes are so synonymous with our own sense of liberty. And what better occasion, than Live Cooking Event with Four Seasons Wine And Gingerclaps.Sip the wine, spill the wine, pour the wine and when all's over head back happy home with wine. For the last event of Four Seasons, check blogpost: Four Seasons Blogger Meet

The terrace adorned with beautiful open pool, the lovely tents and the table, inviting us for the gourmet, the barbecue and the wine, the association so amicable and friendly.By this time,we had already well known a few faces, thanks to the last event on Four Seasons. So it was all us "the Bloggers" ,"the Organizers" and wait.."A former Miss India Earth,Shamita Singha, also brand ambassador of Four Seasons".

The waiter served us a few glasses of wine, and as always, the wines were smooth and so was the weather.Bangalore is perfect for wines, neither too hot nor too cold, and that day the whole 4 hours in an open terrace was a delight. Then we started with our intros,a fellow food blogger,a fellow travel blogger,a fellow fashion blogger, after all it's not everyday you get to see so many like minded people.

We were then served the starters, the chicken starter with the sauce,a heady mix of spicy tangy, while, most of us were so into the food, not to mention we were there at 12 noon, and on Sunday,we were hungry,I know not many would admit it,but thanks to Four Seasons for understanding. So as I said, many were into the food, and some were clicking the best possible shot of food. How much I love the cameras in the event, and how much I love the enthusiasm of those who take best shots of the minutest detail..the food, the oil,the salad, the wine.

A little breeze of cool air swept in,when Mam' Shamita Singha came and introduced herself to the bloggers, making her way to each tent personally.Next was the session on wine and food pairing. The event was well planned, and the lady was a great speaker, who knew the intelligent talk and spoke from the heart. It's not always you see these things,a friendly Former Miss India Earth was never what I had thought of,but yes as I said this event was nothing of that sort.It had a more youthful, vibrant and fun touch.I even had my share of chit chat with the lady,on how she does her travel and how do I plan my Europe travel on a budget.

Next was..well if it's lunch time, and it's wine, there got to be food.Food served on platter is formal, food made live is wow.Yes it is,well before Four seasons cooking event,I had never known there's so much that goes into a Thai curry,I had a rare imagination which was that yes coconut does go in,and yes it looks green, but common it doesn't have to be all that rich and new ingredients. But I was wrong. The Thai curry is a delicacy and altogether different way of cooking. The salad with orange juice, lettuce, wine and cheese was a very new thing to us.And so when we had our salad, rice and Thai curry ready,we were the first to jump in,or say be in the queue.

The barbecued chicken was next with the sauce. The dessert was too inviting, and with all the knowledge on wines and pairing,we decided to pair up with a oh yes wine.Glad I met fellow indiblogger and travel blogger Indrani, travel blogger of dhempe.com,a fellow blogger vaibhav of onvab and many many others.

And finally, when all was almost over,I thanked Akshay and Sumath, for the lovely afternoon we had.Hope soon,we have more such open air fun event,I said open air, because it's lovely out here in Bangalore. We started up with wine, and ended up with one.

It did remind me of a song while returning back..

Chetan Bhagat On Career Women

Recently when one of my friend shared a page of Chetan Bhagat's view on career women on facebook,I couldn't help but agree. And it goes like..

Home truths on career wives----Girls should read, but boys MUST read... Chetan Bhagat

Recently, I saw the recently released movie, Cocktail. The plot revolves around a philanderer hero who has to make the tough choice between two hot women. The uber-modern movie was set in London. The characters drank, danced in nightclubs and had one-night stands with aplomb. They worked in new-age aspirational jobs like glamour photography, graphic art and software design. And yet, the guy eventually chooses the girl who cooks home food, dresses conservatively, wins his mother's approval and is happy to be the ideal Indian wife. In fact, even the rejected girl, a free-spirited, independent woman agrees to change herself. To get the guy, she is happy to cook and change her lifestyle to match that of the ideal Indian wife.

While the movie was fun, such depictions disturb me a little. When successful, strong women are portrayed as finding salvation in making dal and roti for their husbands, one wonders what kind of India we are presenting to our little girls.

Really, is that what a woman's life is all about — to make hot phulkas? Of course, i shouldn't be so bothered, many would say. It is a Bollywood movie. The commercial pressure to present a palatable story is real. Above all, the makers have a right to tell the narrative they want.

Yet, when our most modern and forward cinema sinks into regressive territory, it is unfair to our women. It is also depressing because deep down we know such attitudes exist. Many Indian men, even the educated ones, have two distinct profiles of women — the girlfriend material and the wife material. One you party with, the other you take home. The prejudice against non-traditional women who assert themselves is strong.

Let us look at another part of the world. Yahoo, a leading tech firm and a Fortune 500 company, recently hired a new woman CEO, Marissa Mayer. What's more, she was six months pregnant when she was hired, a fact she did not hide in her interviews.

Marissa will take some time off after childbirth and will be back at work later. She can manage both. There is something to celebrate about that. Marissa is a role model for women and even men.

I'd like Indian men to have an open mind about choosing their life partners and revise their 'ideal woman' criteria. Having a traditional wife who cooks, cleans and is submissive might be nice. However, choosing a capable, independent and career-oriented woman can also bring enormous benefits. For instance, one, a man who marries a career woman gets a partner to discuss his own career with. A working woman may be able to relate better to organizational issues than a housewife. A spouse who understands office politics and can give you good advice can be an asset. Two, a working woman diversifies the family income streams. In the era of expensive apartments and frequent lay-offs, a working spouse can help you afford a decent house and feel more secure about finances. Three, a working woman is better exposed to the world. She brings back knowledge and information that can be useful to the family. Whether it's the latest deals or the best mutual fund to invest in, or even new holiday destinations, a working woman can add to the quality of life. Four, the children of a working woman learn to be more independent and will do better than mollycoddled children. Five, working women often find some fulfillment in their jobs, apart from home. Hence, they may have better life satisfaction, and feel less dependent on the man. This in turn can lead to more harmony. Of course, all these benefits accrue if men are able to keep their massive, fragile egos aside and see women as equals.

Sure, there are drawbacks also in being with working women. But the modern age that we are in, the phulka-making bride may come at a cost of missing out on other qualities. Please bear that in mind before you judge women based on their clothes, interest in the kitchen or the confidence in their voice.

My mother worked for 40 years. My wife is the COO at an international bank. It makes me proud. She doesn't make phulkas for me. We outsource that work to our help, and it doesn't really bother me. If my wife had spent her life in the kitchen, it would have bothered me more.

Please choose your partner carefully. Don't just tolerate, but accept and even celebrate our successful women. They take our homes ahead and our country forward. We may have less hot phulkas, but we will have a better nation.
